Bump, Set, Spike-Coastal
The Coastal Carolina volleyball team (9-9 overall, 3-2 Big South) enters this week going 1-1 last week, defeating Presbyterian 3-1 after falling to Winthrop 3-1. The Chanticleers return for a three-match homestand against Charleston Southern, Gardner-Webb, and UNC Asheville. It will be the first three-match week since finishing up tournament play at the Myrtle Beach Comfort Suites Invitational. Coastal Carolina is 1-0 in conference play at home, defeating Radford 3-1 on Oct. 2. Senior Jill Nyhof remains fourth in the NCAA this week, averaging 1.53 blocks per set.

Notes: Picked to finish ninth in the Big South Preseason Poll... The Bulldogs had a tough match on October 9th against the Liberty Flames, winning the first two sets, but dropping the next three to lose 3-2... Their most recent match up was against the High Point Panthers on October 10, where they lost 3-0. The Bulldogs are currently in sixth in the Big South... Freshmen Carolina Solano was named Defensive Player of the Week on Oct. 5... Senior Regina Feagin is third in the Big South in assists with an average of 10.67 per set while sophomore Evan Moffitt ranks first in service aces with an average of 0.64 per set.

Notes: Has won 10 of its last 11 matches… Has had six Big South weekly honors… Lauren Ficker earned Big South Player of the Week honors on Sept. 8 and Sept. 14… Raquel Miotto earned Big South Defensive Player of the Week honors on Sept. 8, Sept. 14 and Sept. 28… The Bulldogs were picked to finish third in the Big South Preseason Poll…Currently leads the conference after defeating Liberty on Oct. 10…Cindi Miller had a career-high 22 kills to lead the Bulldogs past the Flames... Miotto is currently ranked second in the digs in the Big South, averaging 5.33 digs per set and moved into eighth place on the NCAA All-Time career digs list.
Chanticleers DIG PINK in October
The Coastal Carolina University volleyball team will be participating in the DIG PINK National Breast Cancer Awareness Rally during the month of October. The Chants will be hosting their DIG PINK match against the Liberty Flames Friday, Oct. 23 at 7 p.m., where they will be donning pink uniforms for the match in conjunction with plenty of giveaways for the home crowd.
All proceds generated through the month of October will be donated to The Side-Out Foundation (www.side-out.org) and a local breast cancer organization in the Myrtle Beach/Conway area.
The Great Wall of Nyhof
Senior Jill Nyhof ranks fourth in the NCAA, averaging 1.53 blocks per set. Nyhof trails South Florida’s Alli Arbogast, who averages 1.74 blocks per set and UCLA’s Amanda Gil, who averages 1.55 blocks per set. In 18 matches, Nyhof has totaled 98 total blocks, including 29 solo blocks and had a career high 13 blocks against Dayton at the Mortar Board Premier on Aug. 28.
Bickford Boasting Solid Numbers
Junior Megan Bickford has tallied 126 kills on 304 attempts for a .270 hitting percentage and is averaging 1.94 kills per set. Bickford has registered nine solo blocks and 37 block assists in the Chanticleers’ 18 matches. She posted a season-high 14 kills against Presbyterian (Oct. 10) and a season-high three service aces against Western Carolina (Sept. 19).
Kills the Thrill for Kimes
Junior Chelsy Kimes has recorded 229 kills, averaging 3.52 per set. She has 14 double-digit kill matches and nine double-doubles.

Myrtle Beach Comfort Suites Invitational Honors
Senior Megan Pollard and freshman Sierra Livesay earned All-Tournament honor after helping lead the Chants to two victories. Pollard finished the weekend with 36 digs, 10 assists and four service aces. Livesay earned All-Tournament honors with 33 kills, 18 digs, six service aces and six blocks.

Bash in the ‘Boro Tournament Honors
Junior Chelsy Kimes was selected to the All-Tournament Team at the Bash in the ‘Boro Tournament with 38 kills, 33 digs, 25 assists and six blocks on the weekend. Kimes aveaged 3.34 kills per set and finished the tournament with a .255 attack percentage. In the win over Wake Forest, Kimes tallied her fifth double-double of the season with 12 kills and 14 digs.
There’s No Place Like Home
Coastal Carolina knows how to defend its home court. Since 1987, the Chanticleers are 172-96 in home matches, having gone 10-2 last season at Kimbel Arena. In the 2009 season, the Chants are currently 4-1 at home.
Sweeping Out the House
In its last 14 home openers, Coastal Carolina is 7-7. Out of those 14, nine matches had scores of 3-0, including five Coastal Carolina wins.
Mauck Doubles Up
Sophomore Kelsie Mauck netted an assist-dig double-double against Wake Forest on Saturday, Sept. 12 for her first double-double of the season. Mauck totaled 36 assists and had a career-high 17 digs in the match.
Ace, Ace, Ace
Junior Megan Bickford has pulled out her aces so far this season, leading the Chants with 23. In 2008, Bickford finished fourth on the team with service aces, which she has already surpassed only four weeks into the 2009 season.
Gamecock Invitational Honors
Senior Jill Nyhof and junior Megan Bickford were selected to the All-Tournament Team at the Gamecock Invitational hosted by South Carolina. Nyhof finished the tournament with 20 blocks and 14 kills, including an eight-block match in the win against Eastern Kentucky. Bickford finished the weekend with 17 kills, six blocks, and seven service aces. Three of her seven service aces and seven of her 17 kills came in the win over Eastern Kentucky.
Mortar Board Premier Honors
Senior Jill Nyhof was named to the Mortar Board Premier All-Tournament Team. She finished the weekend with 24 kills and 18 blocks, including a career-high 13 blocks in the first match against Dayton. Nyhof paced the Chanticleers with 12 kills off 21 total attacks for a .524 hitting percentage to lead Coastal Carolina in its first win of the season over Ball State, 3-1.
Familiar Names and Faces
Coastal Carolina returns 11 of 14 players from 2008. The veterans include seniors Meagan Tracey, Megan Pollard, and Jill Nyhof, juniors Megan Bickford, Chelsy Kimes, Amanda Russell, Kristin Cozzens and Becky Stowers and sophomores Erika Lightsey, Kelsie Mauck and Simone Autry.

Two freshmen are on Coastal Carolina’s roster for the 2009 season. New to the team this year are Sierra Livesay and Samantha Palka.
Coastal Carolina Second in Preseason Poll
In the Big South Conference Preseason Poll, Coastal Carolina was picked second by the league’s coaches. The Chanticleers collected 67 points in the poll. Liberty claimed the top spot in the poll with 81 points and nine first-place votes.
Kimes Named to Preseason All-Conference
Junior Chelsy Kimes was one of seven players to be selected to the Preseason All-Big South Conference Team. Kimes, known as one of the Big South’s most lethal attackers, ranked number one in both kills and service aces in the Big South.
Jilllllllexcelent!
Hitting the books has paid off for senior Jill Nyhof. The Alpharetta, Ga. native was selected to the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District III University Division First Team and named the 2008 Big South Scholar-Athlete of the Year. Nyhof carries a perfect 4.0 grade-point average as a political science major.
On the Attack
Junior Chelsy Kimes hit double-digit kills in 27 matches and notched 12 double-doubles last season. Coastal Carolina went 10-2 in 2008 when Kimes had a double-double. In the 2009 season, she already has five double-doubles and the Chants are 3-2 when Kimes has a double-double.
Serving Aces
Chelsy Kimes finished the 2008 season ranked 25th in the NCAA in service aces tallying a career-high 58, which also led the Big South. Kimes currently has six service aces in 2009.
When In September
Under head coach Kristen Bauer, Coastal Carolina is 68-70 in the month of September. In the last two seasons, the Chants have only lost ten matches in September.
When In October
Under head coach Kristen Bauer, Coastal Carolina is 57-43 in the month of October. In the last season, the Chants have only lost two matches in October to Liberty and High Point.
