CONWAY, S.C. – The Coastal Carolina University volleyball team out-hit Gardner-Webb .303 to .132, sweeping through the Bulldogs 3-0 (25-20, 25-20, 25-18) Saturday, Oct. 11, at Kimbel Arena.
The Chanticleers (14-7, 4-2 Big South) were led by sophomore Chelsy Kimes (Munster, Ind./Munster) who registered 13 kills, while Laura Wilcox tallied 10 kills for the Bulldogs (4-16, 2-4 Big South).
In a tight first set, the two squads remained all square at 10-10, before the Chanticleers fired off the next four points to go up 14-10 behind kills from sophomores Megan Bickford (Olathe, Kan./Olathe South) and Amanda Russell (Liberty, Ind./Union County). Gardner-Webb called a timeout but Coastal Carolina kept swinging taking a 20-15 lead, forcing Gardner-Webb to use another timeout. The teams then traded the next 10 points, with the Chanticleers earning the 25-20 edge.
Kimes recorded three service aces, putting the Chanticleers up 6-4. Through much of the second frame, Coastal Carolina held a two-point advantage, but the Bulldogs chipped away at the lead and tied the match at 18-18. The Chanticleers would pick up the next three points, including a kill from junior Jill Nyhof (Alpharetta, Ga./Northview), to stay in front of the Bulldogs 21-18. Kimes and junior Meagan Tracey (Scottsdale, Ariz./Horizon) tallied kills for the last two points of the frame taking a 25-20 victory into the break.
Coastal Carolina jumped ahead to a 9-2 lead in the third set, registering five kills and two service aces. Gardner-Webb would pull within three points of the Chants at 12-9, but Coastal Carolina earned eight of the next 11 points to go up 20-12. Nyhof would end the frame with a kill giving the Chanticleers a 25-18 win.
Senior Brett Starbuck (Glen Allen, Va./J.R. Tucker) recorded 23 digs, while Katie Matykowski earned 14 for the Bulldogs. The Chants recorded seven service aces, while the Bulldogs pulled off six aces in the match.
Coastal Carolina will be in action Tuesday, Oct. 14 when they host South Carolina State at Kimbel Arena. First serve is set for 6 p.m. Gardner-Webb hosts UNC Asheville the same day at 7 p.m.
