Volleyball Drops Heartbreaker to East Carolina In Five Games
CONWAY, S.C. - Coastal Carolina's volleyball team ended it's eight game winning streak after a loss to EastCarolinaUniversity Tuesday. The Lady Chants lost in five games with scores of: 30-26, 28-30, 28-30, 30-22, and 12-15. ECU is now 11-6 while CCU is 10-7.
In game one, Coastal had a 17-11 lead until East Carolina's Mignon Dubenion had a kill and came closer to CCU with a 19-16 game. CCU then took off after a 27-22 difference and won the game after a kill by Katherine Jensen-Spencer (Vancouver, B.C./Sentinel Secondary/Mississippi) 30-26. In the second game, the Lady Chants and the Pirates battled for a lead. At a close CCU 26-25 lead, ECU's Kelly Wernert had a kill and led the Pirates on to the 30-28 win. The third game was tight game until ECU took over in the end for the 30-28 win after a kill from Kelly Wernert led the Pirates on a three point streak. The Lady Chanticleers took control the fourth game with a 16-12 lead, CCU led the entire fourth game and won 30-22. The fifth and final game was a back and forth battle between the Lady Chants and the Pirates. ECU finally finished the contest and won the fifth game 15-12.
Jensen-Spencer led the way for the Lady Chants with 30 kills and 10 digs, just two kills away from her career high in one match. Jennifer Hampton (Lake Forest, Calif./El Toro) tallied 61 assists in CCU's effort. Alicia Meyers (Temecula, Calif./Temecula Valley ) contributed a double-double with 11 kills and 13 digs, Krista Kimble (Lake Forest, Calif./El Toro)also added 11 kills for the Lady Chants.
Pam Ferris led the way for the Pirates recording a double-double with 23 kills and 12 digs. Kelly Wernert added 18 kills, and Erica Wilson added 12 kills, to ECU's victory.
