Volleyball Continues on the Road..

The Coastal Carolina volleyball team looks to snap its Big South losing streak this weekend on the road. Coastal first travels to non-conference South Carolina State on Tuesday, Oct. 10 for a 6 p.m. match-up, then on Friday, Oct. 13, the Lady Chants head to UNC Asheville. That game is set for 6 p.m. Coastal ends its five-match away series at Birmingham-Southern Sunday, Oct. 15 at 2 p.m.

Tuesday, Oct. 10 at S.C. State- 6 p.m.

Friday, Oct. 13 at UNC Asheville 6 p.m.

Sunday, Oct. 15 at Birmingham-Southern - 2 p.m.

Scouting South Carolina State:

The Lady Chanticleers defeated the Bulldogs on Tuesday, Oct. 3, 3-0. However, since then Coastal has not won a match. The Bulldogs are coming off a 3-2 win against Norfolk State, Saturday, Oct. 7.

In the match against Coastal, Lilliana Gootinag and Laura Waters-Brown led the Bulldog offense. S.C. State is 10-9 on the 2006 season.

Scouting UNC Asheville:

UNC Asheville won four straight Big South matches before falling to Winthrop 0-3 on Oct. 6. Big South Preseason Player of the Year and All-American Elif Unlu was the only UNC Asheville player to have double digits in kills against the Eagles, putting 10 down in the match. Raquel Miotto had 15 digs for the Lady Bulldogs.

On the season, UNC Asheville (6-13, 4-1) is led by Unlu who has 294 kills, 213 digs, 28 blocks and 14 service aces. Setter Kaitlyn McDaniel has 745 assists on the season with 133 digs and 77 kills while libero Miotto has scooped up 363 balls and served 27 aces.

The Lady Bulldogs have defeated Birmingham-Southern, Liberty, Radford and High Point in the Big South so far in the 2006 season. Three of the teams the Lady Chanticleers have lost to.

Scouting Birmingham-Southern:

The Lady Panthers are coming off two straight Big South losses, against Winthrop and High Point.

In the 0-3 loss to High Point, BSC was led by Sarah Harris, who had 10 kills and Alex Norton who had 29 digs on the night. Two other players had double digits in digs, Michelle Maciejewski who had 12 digs and also added eight kills and Milica Stojanovic with 11 digs and 35 assists.

On the season, the Lady Panthers (5-13, 2-3) are led by Harris who has 228 kills, 137 digs and 16 blocks. Maciejewski has 338 digs, 221 kills, 24 blocks and has served for 23 aces.

Norton has scooped up 389 balls and Stojanovic has 548 assists and 152 digs.

The Panthers have beaten Liberty and Radford and will play Charleston Southern Friday, Oct. 13 before the Lady Chanticleers come to town.

Rooster Round-up

South Carolina State...

The Coastal Carolina Volleyball defeated South Carolina State in three games, 30-24, 30-18, 30-24 Tuesday, October 3 in Kimbel Arena.

Coastal was led by Kristin Wolf (Andover, Kan./Andover Central) who ended the night with nine kills and six digs. Kristin Rinne (Fountain Hills, Ariz./Fountain Hills) tallied six kills with ten digs and was one of four Lady Chants to have double digits in digs. Nakia Thompson (Lexington, S.C./Lexington) scooped up thirteen balls, Megan Pollard (Naperville, Ill./Naperville) had 11 digs and Meagan Tracey (Scottsdale, Ariz./Horizon) saved ten. Tracey also had 24 assists. The Lady Bulldogs were led by Lilliana Gootinag and Laura Waters-Brown who each had seven kills on the night.

As a team, Coastal hit for .123 on 33 kills with a total 11 blocks, Jill Nyhof (Alpharetta, Ga./Northview) led the blocking with six assisted blocks and two solo blocks. The Lady Bulldogs hit .008 on 32 kills and only had one block.

Liberty...

The Coastal Carolina University Volleyball team fell to Liberty Friday, October 7, 30-20, 30-27, 23-30, 30-24. Three Lady Chanticleers had double digits in kills on the night. Ashley Scheible (Westerville, Ohio/North) and Jill Nyhof led the offense with 12 kills.

Nakia Thompson had a double-double with 10 kills and 10 digs and Kristin Rinne also blasted 10 kills.

The Lady Flames were led by Mary Alice Pike who had 13 kills and 12 digs, three aces and a career-high seven block assists. Kendall Nichols also had 13 kills to go along with her 15 digs. Coastal’s Megan Pollard had a career-high night with her 29 dig performance.

Coastal ended with eight blocks and a .147 hitting percentage while Liberty hit for .137 and had 15 blocks.

Radford...

The Coastal Carolina Volleyball team lost its fourth straight Big South match, falling to Radford, 30-26, 30-26, 30-18, Oct. 7. The Lady Chanticleers fall to 5-14 overall and 1-4 in the Big South, while the Highlanders improved to 6-10 overall and 2-3 in the Big South.

Coastal was led by senior Ashley Scheible who had nine kills on the afternoon. Coastal struggled offensively, with four Lady Chanticleers hitting in the negatives and the team hitting for only .035 and having 30 errors. Coastal had eight total blocks. Libero Megan Pollard scooped up 15 digs on the night. Senior Laura Obert (Cincinnati, Ohio/Mother of Mercy) recorded eight kills while senior Kristin Rinne had seven kills and eight digs in the match.

Three Lady Highlanders had seven kills in the match, Lindsey Wheeler, Lexi Miller and Melinda Clelland. Radford also had three players have double digits in digs, Rachel Newton (17), Lauren Clary (10) and Lindsay Rupert (10). As a team, Radford hit .154 with 21 errors and recorded 12.5 total blocks.

Freshman Continue to Impact...

Jill Nyhof leads the Lady Chanticleer offense with 188 kills, averaging 2.58 kills per game on a .161 hitting percentage.

Meagan Tracey stepped in when sophomore Brett Starbuck (Glen Allen, Va./JR Tucker) suffered a foot injury. Tracey has since played in 49 games having 428 assists.

Megan Pollard leads in two categories for the Lady Chants. She has scooped up 285 balls and has 17 service aces on the season.

Senior Leadership...

The three Coastal seniors this season have made their presence known on the court for Head Coach Kristen Bauer.

Kristin Rinne has played in every match this season recording 121 kills on a .147 hitting percentage. She has also had 182 digs, 40 assists, 32 blocks and 11 service aces.

Ashley Scheible has also played in every match this season. She has recorded 129 kills, hitting .153 on the season with 52 digs and 42 blocks.

Laura Obert has played in every match but one, missing South Carolina State due to an illness. In those 19 matches, Obert leads the team in blocks with 67. She also has tallied 143 kills with a .175 hitting percentage.

Series Against...

South Carolina State...

Coastal leads the SC State series 15-3 and have already defeated the Lady Bulldogs this season.

UNC Asheville...

The series between the Lady Chanticleers and the Lady Bulldogs is tied 15 apiece. Last season Coastal defeated UNC Asheville twice during the regular season before falling to them in the Big South Tournament.

Birmingham-Southern...

Coastal leads the series against the Lady Panthers 8-2. The Lady Chanticleers defeated Birmingham-Southern twice last season.

Big South Conference...

Coastal has seven more Big South matches left in the 2006 season before the Big South Tournament at High Point on Nov. 17. After this weekend, the Lady Chanticleers only have two more games on the road when they travel to High Point and Winthrop Oct. 27 and 28. The remaining matches are in Kimbel Arena against Liberty, Radford, UNCA, Birmingham-Southern and Charleston Southern.

Next Week for the Lady Chants...

The Lady Chanticleers will host Liberty on Oct. 20 at 7 p.m. and Radford on Oct. 21 at 2 p.m. Coastal look to get two wins after falling to both teams earlier in the season.

Around the Big South...

Megan Pollard has had four 20-dig matches this season, the latest being against Liberty (10/9) with 29 digs. Nakia Thompson has had two 20-dig matches, her highest against Charleston Southern (9/23) when she had 23 digs. Jill Nyhof has had one 20-dig match against North Florida (9/16) with 20 digs.

Meagan Tracey has had two 50-assist matches this season. Her highest was against Charleston Southern (9/23) with 58 assists.

Thompson has had eight double-doubles so far this season. Tracey has had six, Brett Starbuck and Kristin Rinne have each had four. Nyhof has had one.

Tracey and Starbuck both rank in the Big South in assists. Tracey is seventh with 428 assists in 29 games, averaging 8.73 a game. Starbuck is ninth with 254 in 41 games, averaging 6.20 a game.

Pollard ranks seventh in digs with 285 in 72 games, averaging 3.96 per game.
