CONWAY, S.C. -- Coastal Carolina women's volleyball team powered its way to a 3-0 sweep over UNC Asheville Friday night at Kimbel Arena, Sept. 28. Game scores were 30-21, 30-25, 30-26. Coastal now improves to 10-7 overall and 2-0 in Big South play, while UNC Asheville falls to 6-12 overall and 0-1 in conference play.
"Kristin Wolf (Andover, Kan./Andover Central) played really well for us tonight with a .455 hitting percentage and three service aces," Head Coach Kristen Bauer said. "I think Kristin was tested tonight, particularly when she was serving with UNC Asheville calling a timeout three times while she served."
The Lady Chanticleers hit over .300 for the fourth time this season, recording a .315 hitting percentage Friday night. Coastal set the tone early in the match by connecting on 21 kills off 33 total attacks with no errors for a .636 hitting percentage in game one alone. Wolf hit 1.000 in game one with five kills off five total attacks. Meanwhile, freshman Chelsy Kimes (Munster, Ind./Munster) added six kills off nine total attacks for a .667 hitting percentage in the first game.
Coastal used an early seven-point run at the beginning of game two to build a five-point lead and never looked back. The closest UNC Asheville was three points midway through the game.
The third game started out as a battle with UNC Asheville eventually leading 10-7. However, Coastal took a 15-10 lead off an eight-point run that included three kills by Kimes, two kills from senior Nakia Thompson (Lexington, S.C./Lexington) and two service aces from Wolf. The Bulldogs pulled to within two off a kill by Kelsey Bernorden to make it a 19-17 game in favor of Coastal. The Lady Chants responded with a four-point run that featured two service aces from freshman Megan Bickford (Olathe, Kan./Olathe South). Coastal saw UNC Asheville try to come back with the Bulldogs pulling to within three points on two occasions late in the match. Sophomore Jill Nyhof (Alpharetta, Ga./Northview) put the match away with the winning kill.
Kimes led the match with 19 kills, while Wolf hit a match-best .455 with six kills off 11 total attacks. Sophomore Meagan Tracey (Scottsdale, Ariz./Horizon) totaled 41 assists, her highest in a three-game match this season. Junior Brett Starbuck (Glen Allen, Va./J.R. Tucker) and Wolf recorded 18 and 15 digs, respectively. Wolf and Bickford also led the match with three service aces each.
Lauren Ficker led UNC Asheville with 12 kills, while Kelsey Benorden had a double-double with 10 kills and 12 digs. Raquel Miotto also had 12 digs for the Bulldogs.
Coastal closes out an eight-match homestand tomorrow afternoon when it hosts Presbyterian at Kimbel Arena. Match time is scheduled for 2 p.m.
