Volleyball Opens Big South Action With 3-0 Sweep Over Charleston Southern

More Information:

CONWAY, S.C. -- The Coastal Carolina University women's volleyball team recorded its second consecutive 3-0 win on Friday night, sweeping Charleston Southern at Kimbel Arena. Coastal has now recorded back-to-back sweeps over the Lady Buccaneers, a feat it has not done since 2002 when the Lady Chanticleers recorded three straight 3-0 wins over Charleston Southern. Games scores to Friday night's match were 30-25, 30-25, 30-20.

With Coastal (8-7, 1-0) and Charleston Southern (7-8, 0-1) tied at 13-all, freshman Chelsy Kimes (Munster, Ind./Munster) broke the tie with a kill and started a crucial three-point run.  Although Charleston Southern would come to within two on three different occasions, the Lady Chants did not give up the lead en route to winning game one.

Coastal overcame two early five-point deficits in game two and used a six-point run to eventually take a 15-14 lead. However, the Lady Buccaneers stayed with striking distance to Coastal. The Lady Chants saw a four-point lead disappear as Christina Lysacek pulled Charleston Southern to within one to make it a 24-23 game in favor of Coastal. Kills by sophomore Jill Nyhof (Alpharetta, Ga./Northview) and senior Nakia Thompson (Lexington, S.C./Lexington) and a service ace by sophomore Megan Pollard (Naperville, Ill./Naperville) gave the Lady Chants a much needed three-point cushion.  Coastal sealed the game when sophomore Meagan Tracey (Scottsdale, Ariz./Horizon) and freshman Megan Bickford (Olathe, Kan./Olathe South) blocked Amanda Hill's kill.

Game three started out close, but Coastal pulled away midway through the game. Senior Devon West (Sudbury, Ontario, Canada/Lockerby Composite/Cambrian College) sealed the win for Coastal with the match-winning kill.

Kimes and Nyhof were the only players with 10+ kills in the match. Kimes had a match-high 13 kills, while Nyhof tallied 11. Tracey put up 35 assists. Meanwhile, junior Brett Starbuck (Glen Allen, Va./J.R. Tucker) and Pollard had 13 and 10 digs, respectively. Pollard also had a match-high three aces.

Hill led Charleston Southern with six kills. Sam Sasan totaled 24 assists. Renae Popovich and Christina Lysacek also recorded 13 and 10 digs, respectively.

Coastal returns to action on Tuesday night when it welcomes UNC Wilmington to Kimbel Arena. Match-time is scheduled for 7 p.m.
