Coastal Carolina volleyball, after placing second this past weekend in the Chanticleer Classic, will be on the road for three games this week. Two of the games will against their Big South Conference rivals High Point University on Sept. 24 at 7 p.m., and against Winthrop University on Sept. 25 at 2 p.m.
Coastal will begin their week of action on Tuesday, Sept. 21 at 7 p.m. as they travel to Wilmington, N.C. to take on the Seahawks. The Seahawks bring a 2-6 record into the contest, having lost their last four games. Wilmington is led by freshman Kate Bennett, who is the sister of former Coastal volleyball player Sarah Bennett. Kate Bennett has tallied a team leading 108 kills and 110 digs this season. She is the current leader in the Colonial Atheltic Conference with better than four kills per game and is fourth in the conference at 4.07 digs per game. Sophomore setter Lacey White is fourth in the conference with 10.85 assists per game.
CCU will open their 2004 Big South Conference schedule on Friday, Sept. 24 at 7 p.m. as they will be in High Point, N.C. take on High Point University. HPU has won three straight home games for the first time in its Divison I history. This will be the first conference game of the season for both squads. The Panthers are led by freshman Jamie Kaufman who has 140 kills this season an average of 3.68 per game, which is fourth in the Big South. Sophomore Lindsey Pickens has totaled 143 kills this year an average of 3.58 per game, which is fifth in the conference. Senior setter Michelle Feiser is fifth in the conference with 9.74 assists per game.
The Lady Chants will continue their trip as they visit Rock Hill, S.C. to play against Winthrop University. The Pre-Season favorites in the Big South are off to a great start at 11-2 and have another game this week against Charleston Southern on Friday before the Eagles and the Lady Chanticleers square off on Saturday. The Eagles are coming off a weekend where they placed second at FSU Classic. Winthrop has only lost four games in their last five matches. Junior Mary Hock was the Co-Player of the Week in the Big South Conference for this past week, after receiving the honor in the first week of season as well. Hock leads the conference in kills (214) per game at 4.55 per game and is fifth in the conference in digs (149) per game at 3.17. Freshman middle hitter Shannon Sitzmann was named the Big Souths Freshman of the Week for her perfomance last week. Sitzmann is currently third in the conference in hitting percentage at .360. Her teammate sophomore Taryn Surbaugh is the current leader with a hitting percentage of .424 and is second in blocks at 1.09 per game. Wintrops Emily Heckl is the current leader is assists per game at 12.66 per game.
This past week, September 20, Coastal's Jennifer Hampton was named Co-Volleyball Player of the Week after aiding Coastal knock off North Carolina State with a 61 assist and 15 digs. For the week Hampton tallied 161 assists, 57 digs and 17 kills.
Coastal volleyball, after this week's games, will be off until October as prepare to take on Radford on Friday, October 1, at 7 p.m. in Radford, Va.
