More Information:

ORANGEBURG, S.C. -- The Coastal Carolina University volleyball team rolled through South Carolina State (25-12, 25-15, 25-14) and North Carolina Central (25-21, 25-17, 25-13) Friday, Sept. 19 on the first day of the South Carolina State Invitational in Orangeburg, S.C.   With the two victories, the Chanticleers move to 8-5 overall, while sweeping their opponents for the fifth and sixth time this season. Freshman Simone Autry (Charlotte, N.C./Independence) made her season debut against S.C. State, while sophomore Megan Bickford (Olathe, Kan./Olathe South) tallied four blocks in the win.     In the first match against S.C. State., the Chanticleers battled through a tough atmosphere and limited the Bulldogs to less than 15 points in each set. Coastal Carolina grabbed the first set 25-12 and then went on an eight-point run during the second set, driven by a series of attacking errors from the Bulldogs to take a 19-10 lead. With a series of attacking errors from the Bulldogs, the Chants picked up the second set 25-17.   A kill by sophomore Amanda Russell (Liberty, Ind./Union County) gave the Chanticleers a 21-7 advantage in the final frame, making way for the 25-14 victory.   After cruising past the Bulldogs, the Chants started slowly against North Carolina Central playing to a 5-5 tie. The Chanticleers would find their rhythm and go on to take the first set 25-21, sealed by a kill by Bickford.   Coastal Carolina swiftly turned the match in its favor in the second set as kills from junior Jill Nyhof (Alpharetta, Ga./Northview) and sophomore Chelsy Kimes (Munster, Ind./Munster) earned the Chants the second set 25-15. Even with an extra break in between games for the Eagles, they could not match the intensity the Chanticleers brought to the court. The Chanticleers put the match out of reach with a five-point run to end the set 25-13.   Coastal Carolina out-hit N.C. Central .345 to .060. Kimes and Nyhof combined for 17 kills, while Big South Freshman of the Week Kelsie Mauck (Muncie, Ind./Delta) registered 64 assists in the win.      The Chanticleers continue play at the South Carolina State Invitational Saturday, Sept. 20 when they face Wofford at 1 p.m. and Hampton at 5 p.m.
