WILMINGTON, N.C. The Coastal Carolina University volleyball team (3-10) fell to UNC WIlmington (6-8) 3-1 Sept. 19 in Wilmington, N.C. Game scores were 30-23, 18-30, 30-26 and 30-18.
UNC Wilmington won seven of the last eight point to take game one 30-23. Coastal led early 8-4 on a service ace from senior Kristin Rinne (Fountain Hills, Ariz./Fountain Hills). Coastal then went up 12-9 on a kill from freshman Jill Nyhof (Alpharetta, Ga./Northview). Two consecutive blocks then gave UNCW a 13-12 lead. Coastal took its last lead at 17-16, but two aces from UNCW made it 20-18 Seahawks. Coastal hit .074 in game one, while the Seahawks had a .448 hitting percentage and four blocks.
Coastal took the first seven points of game two and never looked back in a 30-18 win. After kills from Rinne and Nyhof, the Lady Chanticleers took advantage of four attack errors by the Seahawks to take a seven-point lead. Another Rinne ace gave CCU a 12-3 lead. A kill from senior Ashley Scheible (Westerville, Ohio/North) made it 18-10 Coastal. Rinne had her fourth ace of the match at 26-13 and a Nyhof kill gave Coastal the 30-18 win. The Lady Chants hit .258 in the second game.
Coastal took an early 6-4 lead in game three off a Scheible kill, but UNCW would go up 9-8 and would not trail again, winning 30-26. The Seahawks led 16-12, but Coastal got it to 17-15 on a Rinne kill. UNCW then took a six-point lead (27-21), but Coastal scored four striaght points off of Nyhofs serve and two kills from Rinne. UNCW took the last two points of the game to lead 2-1. Both teams had high hitting percentage in game three, as the Seahawks hit .395 and the Lady Chants had a .341 percentage.
UNCW jumped out to a 13-5 lead in game four in taking the game 30-18. Senior Laura Obert (Cincinnati, Ohio/Mother of Mercy) and junior Nakia Thompson (Lexington, S.C./Lexington) had two kills apiece in the fourth game. The Lady Chants hit -.023 in the fourth game, while UNCW had a .213 hitting percentage.
Rinne led the Lady Chants with 11 kills, while Thompson and Obert had 10 apiece. Freshman Megan Pollard (Naperville, Ill./Central) and Nyhof had 11 digs apiece, while freshman Meagan Tracey (Scottsdale, Ariz./Horizon) had 42 assists. Obert also had a solo block and three assisted blocks.
For UNCW, Lindsay Strucko had 15 kills and Liz Mitchell had 15 digs. Jill Hoeck had 48 assists in the winning effort.
Coastal ended the game with a .162 hitting percentage and seven total blocks. UNCW hit .253 on the match and had nine total blocks.
Coastal starts the Big South slate Saturday, Sept. 24 at Charelston Southern. The match starts at 6 p.m.
