The Coastal Carolina (5-3) volleyball team began its home season the right way, by defeating University of Tennessee-Chattanoga (0-7) in three games 33-31, 30-16, 30-28 on the first day of the Microtel Inn and Suites Chanticleer Classic, Sept. 17.
In the first match Coastal was trailing the Lady Mocs 26-29, facing a game point when it rallied to score the next three points to tie the game at 29-29. Junior Katherine Jensen ( Vancouver, B.C./Sentinel Secondary) recorded two kills and sophomore Alicia Meyers (Temecula, Calif./Temecula Valley) recorded the other kill to knot the game at 29. After a bit of back and forth action with each team having a chance to put the other away, Coastal took control for good when sophomore Laura Obert (Cinncinnati, Ohio/Mother of Mercy) and Meyers recorded kills on consecutive plays to give Coastal a 33-31 come from behind victory.
The second match was a close contest at 9-8 until CCU went on an 11-3 spurt with Meyers leading the charge. From that point on UTC would get no closer than nine as the Lady Chants closed the match on a 10-5 run to take the second game 30-16.
The third and final game of the evening was one where Coastal looked to run away as they started on a 7-1 run. UTC would not go quietly as they had a spurt of its own, and actually briefly held the lead at 14-13. The match would be back and forth with neither side really able to pull away. The Lady Chants would capture the lead back for good at 20-18 and not reliquish it for the rest of the match, eventually capturing the victory 30-28.
Coastal was led to the three-game victory by Jensen, whose 12 kills led both teams. She also tallied 10 digs. Jennifer Hampton (Lake Forest, Calif./El Toro) had game leading 35 assists and 13 digs. Junior setter Kali Banghart (Woodbridge, Va./C.D. Hylton) had a great game with a game high 18 digs. Sophomore Kristin Rinne (Foutain Hills, Ariz./Fountain Hills) was the fourth and final Chant in double figures in digs with 12.
CCU was outhit by the Lady Mocs 63-65 in kills but did hit a much higher percentage at .287-.173. Coastal also outblocked UTC 13-4.
Coastal will next play on September 18 as they open the second day of the Chanticleer Classic with a match against North Carolina State (9-1) set to begin at 11:30 a.m. The Lady Chants will play one more match tommorrow evening as they finish the tournament with a game against Long Island at 7 p.m.
