The Coastal Carolina (5-3) volleyball team began its home season the right way, by defeating University of Tennessee-Chattanoga (0-7) in three games 33-31, 30-16, 30-28 on the first day of the Microtel Inn and Suites Chanticleer Classic, Sept. 17.

Junior Katherine Jensen ( Vancouver, B.C./Sentinel Secondary) recorded two kills and sophomore Alicia Meyers (Temecula, Calif./Temecula Valley) recorded the other kill to knot the game at 29. After a bit of back and forth action with each team having a chance to put the other away, Coastal took control for good when sophomore Laura Obert (Cinncinnati, Ohio/Mother of Mercy) and Meyers recorded kills on consecutive plays to give Coastal a 33-31 come from behind victory.

The second match was a close contest at 9-8 until CCU went on an 11-3 spurt with Meyers leading the charge. From that point on UTC would get no closer than nine as the Lady Chants closed the match on a 10-5 run to take the second game 30-16.

The third and final game of the evening was one where Coastal looked to run away as they started on a 7-1 run. UTC would not go quietly as they had a spurt of its own, and actually briefly held the lead at 14-13. The match would be back and forth with neither side really able to pull away. The Lady Chants would capture the lead back for good at 20-18 and not reliquish it for the rest of the match, eventually capturing the victory 30-28.
