Volleyball falls short against Pittsburgh in 2002 CCU Classic

CONWAY, S.C. - The Pittsburgh Panther volleyball team took the crown at the 2002 CCU Classic at Kimbel Arena in Conway. The Panthers defeated Coastal Carolina, 3-0 (30-25, 30-22, 30-26) this evening , to go a perfect 3-0 for the tournament.

Pittsburgh's Wendy Hatlestad had 17 kills while Carrie Norris had 34 assists and four aces to help lead the Panthers in the victory over CCU. The Lady Chants were led by Katie Knutson who had 13 kills and Jennifer Hampton with 25 assists.

In Coastal's opening match of the day, Carly Draudt had nine kills, while Hampton had 22 assists to help CCU sweep Savannah State, 3-0 (30-7, 30-5, 30-5) Saturday afternoon. Knutson had a match-high six aces in the sweep over the Lady Tigers. Savannah State was led by Janice Reynolds who had two kills.

Knutson, along with Sarah Bennett were named to the All-Tournament Team.Knutson had 34 kills along with six services aces for the tournament while Bennett had 26 kills in three matches.

The Lady Chants will next compete in the Clemson Invitational on Sept. 20-21. Teams competing in the tournament include: Clemson, Virginia Tech and TCU.
