CULLOWHEE, N.C. The Coastal Carolina University volleyball team (4-5) split a pair of games at its own Coastal Carolina Classic Sept. 13 in Kimbel Arena. The Lady Chanticleers defeated Wofford College by scores of 30-22, 30-12 and 30-19, but fell to Florida Atlantic University 25-30, 18-30 and 28-30. CCU ends up 1-2 at the tourney. Clemson University went 3-0 to take the Classic title.
Against the Terriers, Coastal hit .337 to make quick work of Wofford. Senior Sarah Bennett (Eagan, Minn./Eagan) led the offensive charge with 11 kills. Sophomore Katherine Jensen (Vancouver, B.C./Sentinel Secondary) and freshman Alicia Meyers (Temecula, Calif./Temecula Valley) added nine apiece. Freshman Kristin Rinne (Fountain Hills, Ariz./Fountain Hills), who was selected to the All-Tournament Team, and Jensen had 14 digs apiece. Sophomore setter Jennifer Hampton (Lake Forest, Calif./El Toro) had 28 assists and seven digs. CCU had seven total blocks in the match, as sophomore Krista Kimble (Lake Forest, Calif./El Toro) and one solo and three assisted blocks.
Jensen (13) and Bennett (11) were in double figures in kills against FAU, but the Owls hit .229 for the match to take the three-game match. Jensen had 11 digs and Hampton added 34 assists, but Coastal was outdug 61-52 and outkilled 51-40.
The Most Valuable Player of the tournament was Ryane Beasley of Clemson University. She was joined by Lori Ashton and Lindsey Abbott of Clemson, Jeana Boyle and Cayse Kaveny of Florida Atlantic and Rinne.
Coastal will play at Kimbel Arena Sept. 19-20 at the CCU Tournament featuring Eastern Michigan University, East Carolina University and Bethune-Cookman College. The Lady Chants and Eastern Michigan hook up Sept. 19, at 7 p.m.
