The Coastal Carolina University volleyball team (1-1)defeated West Virginia in the early matches of the day 30-19, 30-25, 30-18 in Dayton, Ohio in the Dayton Invitational on September 4th for their first win of the season.
In game one, Coastal jumped out to an early 8-4 lead and slowly extended the margin to as much as 21-12 before West Virginia pulled within eight. But the Chanticleers slammed the door to take the game 30-19. Coastal again spurted ahead early in game two, this time 9-2. The Mountaineers rallied to pull within three at 13-10. The two teams traded points, keeping it within a four-point margin, before Coastal Carolina put it away 30-25. Game three went to CCU, as the Chants opened up a 13-3 advantage and West Virginia could get no closer than eight at 16-8. Then Coastal reeled off 10 of the next 12 points to coast to a 30-18 win.
Sophomore Ashley Scheible (Westerville, Ohio/North) led the Lady Chants with nine kills and five aces. Four different Coastal volleyball players were in double figures in digs led by sophomore Alicia Meyers (Temecula, Calif./Temecula Valley) with 20. Other Chants in double figures in digs were juniors Katherine Jensen (Vancouver, B.C./Sentinel Secondary ( Ole Miss)) and Jennifer Hampton (Lake Forest, Calif./ El Toro) and sophomore Kristin Rinne (Fountain Hills, Ariz/Fountain Hills) who registered 15, 11 and 10, respectively. Hampton led the team with 24 assists
For the match, the Chanticleers hit.164 on 38 kills and 19 errors. The Lady Chants also outblocked West Virginia 7-4.
CCU will continue their play in the Dayton Invitational with a second match later on today. The second game is set to begin at 5 p.m. against Tennessee-Tech.
