BUFFALO-N.Y.-The Coastal Carolina Volleyball team (1-4) fell to Fordham (2-2) and Buffalo (5-2) Saturday in the Western New York Invitational.
Despite taking the Rams to four games, the Lady Chanticleers couldn't come up with the win and lost the match 3-1; 18-30, 18-30, 30-28 and 20-30. Junior Nakia Thompson (Lexington, S.C./Lexington) had another strong day for the Lady Chanticleers recording a double-double, 11 kills and 15 digs. Freshman Jill Nyhof (Alpharetta, Ga./Northview) also came out firing with 11 kills on the day and sophomore Brett Starbuck (Glen Allen, Va./JR Tucker) had 24 assists and 14 digs.
Coastal as a team had 43 kills with just a .048 hitting percentage and five team blocks to Fordham's 66 kills on .259 hitting percentage and seven team blocks.
The Lady Chanticleers took the first two games from Buffalo but then fell in the final three games to lose, 31-29, 30-26, 25-30, 19-30, 10-15. Coastal was led by Thompson and Nyhof again in the loss, Thompson had 13 kills and 20 digs while Nyhof had 12 kills and 7 digs. Senior Ashley Scheible (Westerville, Ohio/North) had 13 kills and freshman Megan Pollard (Naperville, Ill./Naperville Central) had 25 digs in the loss.
As a team, Coastal had 58 kills on 43 errors with a .073 hitting percentage and 11 team blocks to Buffalo's 63 kills on 33 errors with a .155 hitting percentage and 16 team blocks.
The Lady Chants are back in action Friday, September 8 when they travel to Washington, D.C. to participate in the Georgetown Classic to face Howard, Campbell and Georgetown.
