More Information:

BLACKSBURG, VA – The Coastal Carolina University volleyball team held off Maryland-Eastern Shore in the final two sets to secure a 3-2 (16-25, 25-19, 20-25, 25-15, 15-9) victory Saturday, Aug. 30, at Cassell Coliseum in Blacksburg, Va.

The Chanticleers (2-0) were caught off guard in the opening set, allowing UMES (0-2) to open an 8-2 lead, forcing Coastal Carolina to call a timeout. The break would not solve the sluggish start, as the Chants slipped behind 20-10, before surrendering the first set 25-16 to the Hawks.

In a tightly contested second set, the Chanticleers traded the lead with the Hawks. A kill by sophomore Chelsy Kimes (Munster, Ind./Munster) tied the score at 16-16 before the Chants took command of the set recording the next five points. Junior setter Meagan Tracey (Scottsdale, Ariz./Horizon) registered her lone kill of the match as Coastal Carolina won the second set 25-19.

The Chanticleers gained a bit of momentum tallying the first four points of the third set, but UMES put together a six-point run to go ahead 24-16. The Chanticleers attempted a comeback with a four-point rally, but UMES closed out the set 25-20.

Spurred by a kill from junior Jill Nyhof (Alpharetta, Ga./Northview), the Chanticleers surged out to an 8-1 advantage in the fourth set. The Chants looked comfortable on the attack, and cruised to a 25-15 win, to force a fifth and final set.

In the deciding set, the Chants took an early five-point lead and dominated the Hawks 15-9.

Kimes registered a team-high 17 kills led the Chanticleers attack, while Nyhof had 11 kills and sophomore Megan Bickford (Olathe, Kan./Olathe South) recorded 12 kills. Senior Brett Starbuck (Glen Allen, Va./J.R. Tucker) had a game-high 22 digs, while junior Megan Pollard (Naperville, Ill./Naperville Central) earned 10 of her own. Tracey totaled 44 assists for the Chants.

Coastal Carolina will face Virginia Tech Saturday evening at 7 p.m., in the final match of the Hawthorn Suites Hokie Invitational.
