CONWAY - The Coastal Carolina volleyball team will open the 2011 season against UNC Greensboro at 1:00 p.m. in the UNC Greensboro Tournament, which will take place from Friday, August 26 through Saturday, August 27 in Greensboro, N.C. at Fleming Gym.
Coastal will also face North Carolina A&T on Friday at 5:00 p.m. before taking on Evansville at 1:00 p.m. and East Tennessee State at 5:00 p.m. on Saturday, August 27.
"With several unforeseen injuries through the pre-season, we are a little nervous entering tournament play," said Coastal Carolina head coach Kristen Bauer.
"We are however, excited to see how our team responds to adversity and true competition. With four opportunities to play, we will be able to play with lineups if we choose and get a feel for how our new team responds to pressure."
The Chanticleer will be facing the Spartans of UNC Greensboro for the 11th time with the Spartans holding the 8-2 advantage winning the last match 3-2 on September 4, 2010 in the Gamecock Invitational.
The Chants were predicted to finish third in the Big South's annual preseason poll that was voted on by the league's head coaches.
Four starters are returning for Coastal Carolina, including sophomore Meghan Laffin who was chosen to the Preseason All-Big South Conference team. Laffin was a member of the Big South All-Freshman team and was also a two-time Big South Freshman of the Week honoree during the 2010 season. During her freshman season Laffin played in every match for the Chanticleers. She ended the season ranked second on the team in service aces (27) and total blocks (88), as well as third in kills (229).
UNC Greensboro was picked to finish fourth in the North division of the Southern Conference after going 22-12 overall and 9-7 in the conference last season.
