CONWAY, S.C. – The Coastal Carolina University volleyball team is well underway for the 2010 season, finishing up preseason camp on Tuesday, Aug. 17.  The Chanticleers are coming off a championship season, capturing the 2009 Big South Tournament title  which sent them off to Nebraska for the NCAA Tournament.  It was the third time Coastal has made an appearance in the tournament and first for 12th year head coach Kristen Bauer

“Our returners realize we have a target on our back after our preseason ranking,” Bauer said.  “It’s always nice to peak at the right time, but we aren’t satisfied with the way we ended our conference play.  Our goal is to improve our overall record and achieve back-to-back NCAA appearances.”

Coastal returns four starters, including 2009 Big South Tournament MVP and 2010 Big South Preseason Player of the Year Chelsy Kimes, as well as Big South Freshman of the Year Sierra Livesay and Second Team All-Big South honoree Megan Bickford.  Five newcomers have joined the 2010 Big South preseason favorite squad and look to make an immediate impact to the team.

“Our coaching staff is very pleased with our freshman thus far,” Bauer said.  “They arrived well-conditioned and have already shown improvement.  We expect several of them to contribute immediately.”

Preseason has consisted of two-a-day sessions and the workouts have featured individual fundamental work as well as team drills and some scrimmaging.

It has not been all work for the Chants this preseason as they have mixed in a little fun with team bonding activities such as making a music video or trying to guide a ball with a banana that is tied around their waist by a string.  These videos and more can be seen on the team’s Facebook page

Coastal will finish up its camp today and kick into its in-season schedule with one practice a day before traveling up to Wake Forest to open the 2010 season in the Deacon Invitational Aug. 27-28.

Fans, make sure to check out the team’s Facebook page and keep up with all the upcoming activities, as well as view videos from preseason camp and the upcoming season.
