CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Coastal Carolina University’s women’s volleyball team was selected to finish second in the 2009 Big South Preseason Poll by the league’s head volleyball coaches, announced today by the league office. Also announced was the Preseason All-Big South Team with junior Chelsy Kimes being selected.
After finishing the 2008 season in a three-way tie with Liberty and High Point for the regular season, the Chanticleers were picked second to finish behind two-time defending Big South champion Liberty. The Lady Flames received all nine first-place coaches’ votes, to give them 81 points. Coastal Carolina came in second totaling 67 points with UNC Asheville close behind at third with 62 points. Coming in fourth was High Point with 51 points and Winthrop closing out the top five with 49 points. Presbyterian was voted sixth with 28 points and Charleston Southern took the seventh slot totaling 27 points. Radford received 24 points to put them at the No. 8 slot and rounding out the field was Gardner-Webb with 16 points.
The Chants’ season begins on August 28-29 at the Mortar Board Premier Tournament at Purdue University against the University of Dayton at 4:30p.m. Also playing in the tournament is Purdue and Ball State University.

2008: Known as one of the Big South’s most lethal attackers, appeared in 35 matches… Finished the year ranked 25th in the NCAA in service aces tallying a career-high 58, which also led the Big South… Was an All-Big South First Team selection… Registered 3.81 kills per set to rank 48th in the NCAA… Led the team in kills and service aces… Named Big South Player of the Week twice… Had four 20+ kill performances and recorded a career-high 27 kills against UNC Asheville (Oct. 18) and High Point (Nov. 1)… Hit double-digits kills in 27 matches and notched 11 double-doubles including five in the last six matches… Tallied 15 kills and produced a career-high nine service aces against Radford (Sept. 26)… Knocked down 45 kills in three matches at the Hokie Invitational to earn All-Tournament honors... Collected her first double-double of the season with 15 kills and 16 digs against Virginia Tech (Aug. 30).
