CHARLOTTE, N.C. - In a vote of the conference head coaches, the Coastal Carolina volleyball team was picked sixth in the Big South preseason poll, the conference office announced today. In addition, rising senior Jamie DiMaggio was named Preseason All-Big South at the libero position.
Liberty, the conference's defending regular season and tournament champion, was selected to finish first, garnering 99 points and nine first-place votes. Radford, who finished with a 9-5 conference mark in 2011, was voted second with 78 points. Winthrop (74), UNC Asheville (59) and High Point (56) rounded out the top five. Coastal received 53 votes to finish sixth in the poll followed by Campbell (47), Presbyterian College (45), Gardner-Webb (28) and Charleston Southern (11).
Coastal finished eighth with a 5-9 record. The 2012 Chanticleers, who are led by first-year head coach Jozsef Forman, return 12 members from last year's team including DiMaggio, and Big South All-Freshman team member Lian Bernett. In addition, Coastal also return Kindra Bailey and Katie Martin, both of whom started every match for the Chants and ranked as the team's top two blockers.
DiMaggio earns her first preseason all-conference honor after recording 251 digs last season to go along with her 19 assists, 11 service aces and four kills. The Crystal Lake, Ill., native recorded a career high 18 digs versus Evansville as she helped the Chants to a 13-20 overall mark in 2011.
The 2012 season gets underway for Coastal on August 24 with the first of three weekend matches at the Clemson-hosted Big Orange Bash.
