CONWAY - The 2013 Coastal Carolina volleyball schedule features 10 home contests including a six-match tournament to open the season inside The HTC Center. Three of CCU’s opponents advanced to the NCAA Tournament a season ago including College of Charleston, Tennessee and reigning Big South Champions Liberty. CCU will also face two members of the Big Ten, two members of the SEC and one member of the ACC.
The Chants ended last season with a 14-14 record but were 7-3 in their final 10 matches and advanced to the Big South Conference Championship match where they fell to rival Liberty. The Chants were also 6-1 at home against BSC opponents last season and will look to improve after losing just two seniors and adding a talented group of recruits.
The Chants open up the season at home Aug. 30-31 as they host the Coastal Carolina Tournament. The Chants will host Youngstown State in the opening match of the tournament at 6 p.m. on Friday. The Chants will also face Wofford at 11 a.m. and Big Ten Conference member Iowa at 7 p.m. on Saturday.
Coastal’s first road test of the season is on September 6 against College of Charleston who advanced to the NCAA Tournament last season and ended the year with a 27-8 record. The Cougars are the lone team on the Chants schedule to boast an NCAA Tournament match victory last season as they defeated then 23rd-ranked Miami 3-2 in the opening round. The match will be the first of three for the Chants in Charleston as they take part in the College of Charleston Invitational. The Chants will face Big Ten member Indiana and South Carolina State at the CofC Invitational as well.
The Chants will close out the early portion of their schedule with trips to Kennesaw, Ga., to take part in the KSU Owls Classic hosted by Kennesaw State on Sept. 13-14, and Knoxville, Tenn., to participate in the Tennessee Tournament on Sept. 20-21. CCU will face both ACC member Georgia Tech and SEC member Tennessee at the Tennessee Tournament. The Vols finished last season with a 22-8 mark and advanced to the NCAA Tournament.
CCU’s Big South Conference opener takes place Sept. 27 as the Chants travel to Winthrop. The Chants play 14 BSC matches including seven at home. The Chants BSC home opener is Oct. 4 as CCU hosts High Point. HPU (Oct. 4), Campbell (Oct. 5), Charleston Southern (Oct. 11), Gardner-Webb (Oct. 25), UNC Asheville (Oct. 26), Presbyterian (Nov. 2) and Winthrop (Nov. 3) will all make their way to Conway throughout Oct. and Nov.
CCU’s matches against Gardner-Webb and UNC Asheville on Oct. 25 and 26, respectively, will serve as the Chants’ Dig Pink Weekend. Dig Pink is a nationwide breast cancer awareness initiative started by the Side-Out Foundation. The Side-Out Foundation was established in 2004 to unite volleyball players and coaches and to have them work toward the common goal of furthering breast cancer awareness, education and patient services.
The final 2012 NCAA Tournament participant on CCU’s schedule is Liberty. The Chants will travel to Lynchburg, Va. on Oct. 19 for a rematch of the 2012 Big South Conference Tournament Championship match.
Coastal’s final non-conference match is against in-state rival and SEC member South Carolina. After the Gamecocks traveled to Conway last season, the Chants will head to Columbia on Oct. 30 for a 6 p.m. match.
The Big South Championship will take place at Presbyterian College Nov. 21-24.
