RADFORD, Va. – The No. 4 Coastal Carolina University volleyball team swept No.1 UNC Asheville 3-0 (25-18, 25-18, 25-23) on Friday, Nov. 20 in the semifinals of the Big South Tournament. The Chanticleers will face No. 2 Liberty in a rematch of last year’s Championship match. Coastal improved to 19-13 overall and the Bulldogs fell to 25-10.
The Chants were the only Big South team this season to beat the Bulldogs every match and today they held UNC Asheville to a .091 team attack percentage, compared to Coastal’s team attack percentage of .280. The last two match-ups went to five sets.
It will be the fifth time the Chants have appeared in the Championship match, as they won the tournament in 1996 and 1998. Coastal Carolina has faced Liberty six times in the Big South Tournament and are 3-3 against the Flames, beating Liberty in the Championship match in 1998.
Chelsy Kimes led the offense with 19 kills and Amanda Russell added 16 digs on defense. Jill Nyhof added nine kills and two blocks while Meagan Tracey guided the team with 38 assists. Megan Pollard registered 12 digs.
The Chanticleers jumped out to an early 5-1 lead in the first set to set the pace. Both teams flip-flopped points before Coastal went on a 6-0 run to put them up 16-6. UNC Asheville tried to build a comeback, but they had dug too deep of a hole and the Chants took the first set 25-19. Junior Chelsy Kimes led the set with 12 kills and no errors for a .667 attack percentage in the first set. Amanda Russell led the defense with nine digs.
Both teams came out evenly matched in the second set, but Coastal Carolina never allowed the Bulldogs to take the lead. With the Chanticleer lead at 17-12, the Bulldogs went on a 3-0 run to put them down by only two. Coastal kept the lead and at 20-17 went on a 5-0 run to win set two 25-18.
In the third set, UNC Asheville came out on the attack and took its first lead of the match, but it was not for long as the Chants took the lead at 5-3. The Bulldogs answered back with a 5-0 run to regain the lead. Coastal Carolina answered back and after being down by five, the Chants went on a 7-0 run. The Chants would go on another late 5-0 run to take the lead for the final time and win the final set 25-23.
Coastal Carolina returns to the court on Saturday, Nov. 21 to face No. 2 Liberty at 2 p.m. for the rematch of last year’s Big South Championship, which Liberty won 3-1.
