ASHEVILLE, N.C. – The Coastal Carolina University volleyball team rallied back after dropping the first two sets to defeat UNC Asheville 3-2 (23-25, 23-25, 25-21, 25-21, 15-13) for the second time this season on Friday, Nov. 13 at the Justice Center. The Chanticleers improve to 17-12 overall and 10-5 in the Big South while the Bulldogs fall to 23-9 and 12-3 in the Big South.
Chelsy Kimes led the Chants with 22 kills and 10 digs for her 15th double-double of the season while also adding five service aces. Jill Nyhof had a season-high 15 kills and posted nine blocks while Meagan Tracey had a season-high 61 assists. Freshman Sierra Livesay registered a career-high 19 digs to lead the Chants while also tallying 16 kills.
The Chanticleers remained consistent in its hitting despite allowing the Bulldogs to take the first two sets. Coastal finished the match hitting .242, including hitting .262 or better in three of the five sets. UNC Ashville finished the night hitting just .182 as a team.
The Bulldogs started the first set going out to an early 6-2 lead and kept the lead throughout the set, never allowing the Chants to tie the set. From the beginning, it was all UNC Asheville, but Coastal gradually cut the lead to one late in the set at 23-22. UNC Asheville’s Cindi Miller put the Bulldogs up by two at 24-22 with a kill from Rachel Guinane, but a kill by Chelsy Kimes kept the Chants in the set. Miller added another kill to seal the set win and give UNC Asheville the 1-0 match advantage.
The second set started similar to the first with UNC Asheville going out to a 9-5 lead, but Coastal Carolina went on a 5-1 run to tie the set at 10-all. There would be four more ties before the Bulldogs took its final lead at 16-15. Coastal came to within two at 23-21 and would hold the Bulldogs at 24 for two points on a Megan Bickford kill and Kimes ace before UNC Asheville won the set on a service error and went out to a 2-0 match lead. After dropping the first two sets, Coastal Carolina came out in the third playing like a different team.
The Chants went out to a 5-0 lead early in the third, but the Bulldogs battled back to tie the set at 9-all. After four more ties, Coastal took the final lead at 19-18 and couldn’t be stopped. UNC Asheville tried to rally against the Chants, but Coastal went on a 3-1 run to close out the third set, 25-21.
Both teams came out hard in the fourth set, forcing seven ties with the final tie at 15-all. After the final tie, Coastal took the lead and took control of the set. Sierra Livesay delivered the final kill to tie the match at 2-2, forcing a deciding set.
In the fifth, Coastal Carolina jumped out to an 8-3 lead and seemed to be too much for the Bulldogs to handle. The Bulldogs however rallied with a 4-0 run of their own to cut the lead to one, but the Chants were up to the task with a 4-1 run of their own to push the lead to 12-8. Nyhof and Kimes delivered the final blows with a kill each to give Coastal Carolina the win and sweep the Bulldogs in the regular season.
Nyhof and Livesay came alive in the last three sets. Livesay tallied 12 kills in the last three sets after posting just four in the first two. Nyhof also added 12 kills in the final three sets after being held to just three in the first two.
The Chants finish out the regular season on Saturday, Nov. 14 as they travel to Gardner-Webb for a 2 p.m. match.
