Coastal Ends Regular Season with a 3-2 Win Over Campbell

Chants earn win in final regular season match for first time since 2008

Buies Creek, N.C. - On Saturday, Nov. 12 the Coastal Carolina volleyball team wrapped up the regular season with a 3-2 win over Campbell to improve to 13-19 on the season, while moving to 5-9 in the Big South Conference.

The Chants took the first two sets by scores of 25-22 and 25-15. Campbell tied the match up at two apiece after taking the third set, 25-20 and the fourth set, 25-13. Coastal used a late run in the fifth set to win by a 15-10 score.

Freshman Lian Bernett helped Coastal take an early 6-2 lead in the first set as she recorded two service aces and a kill. Campbell tied the match at six all on an attack error by the Chants. The Camels took their first lead of the match a couple of points later after Chelsey Pachoud posted a kill. Campbell would not hold onto the lead for long as senior Erika Lightsey tallied a kill and Campbell recorded an attack error to put the Chants ahead 9-8. Coastal eventually used a 6-1 run to go ahead 17-12 and the Camels were only able to come within two of the Chants from the point on, as Coastal took the 25-22 win.

The Chanticleers opened up the second set in much the same fashion as they did the first set taking a 4-0 lead before going up 6-2. Campbell pulled within four points of the Chanticleers at 9-5, but didn't get any closer, while Coastal won 25-15. Bernett recorded six kills for the Chants in the second set to lead the way.

During the third set, neither team was able to take the momentum until Campbell used a 6-1 run to go ahead 16-12. Campbell went ahead by as many as six points before Coastal was able to cut it to two points at 21-19 following a kill by sophomore Sam Skryd. The Camels used a 4-1 run to put the final score at 25-20.

Campbell carried the momentum into the fourth set as they went ahead 3-1 early on before Coastal tied the score at three apiece on an attack error by the Camels. Coastal came back from being a point down to tie the score two more times, but Campbell then went on a 10-1 run to take the 15-6 advantage. The Chanticleers were unable to recover and the Camels ended the fourth set with a 5-1 run to win 25-13.

The Camels continued their run into the fifth set as they went ahead 3-0, but Coastal answered by scoring the next three points. Campbell answered right back with another 3-0 run. Coastal tied the set up at seven all and took their first lead at 9-8 on an attack error by the Camels. The Chants scored the next four points to build up a 13-8 lead. Campbell made it a 13-10 game following a kill by Jordan Reaves, but Coastal scored the next two points on kills by sophomore Kindra Bailey and Lightsey to win 15-10.

Coastal won its final regular season match for the first time since 2008 when they beat Presbyterian 3-2.

Lightsey finished the match with 14 kills, 10 digs and three service aces, while Bernett posted 12 kills, 11 digs and two service aces. Sophomore Lindsay Gill grabbed a team- high 27 digs and freshman Katie Martin recorded six blocks. Skryd recorded 47 assists on the afternoon.

Brooke Kelley led the Camels in kills with 14 and Kelsey Campbell had a team-high 24 digs. Annie Kobeski finished the match with four blocks. Heather Wilson posted 46 assists and two service aces.

Coastal will return to action on Thursday, Nov. 17 in the quarterfinals of the Big South Conference Tournament, which will take place in Charleston, S.C. at Charleston Southern University. The Big South Tournament will run until Sunday, Nov. 20 when the championship game will be played at 2:00 p.m.
