Coastal Volleyball Ousted by High Point

High Point, N.C. - The Coastal Carolina volleyball team's two game win streak was snapped on Friday, Nov. 11 when they were beaten 3-1 by Big South Conference opponent High Point.
The Panthers of High Point took the first set 25-23, before the Chants tied the match up in the second set with a 25-17 win. High Point took the next two sets by a 25-19 score. Coastal fell to 12-19 on the season and moved to 4-9 in conference action.
The Chanticleers scored the first three points of the first set, but High Point went on to score the next five points to take the 5-3 advantage. High Point built a seven point lead, going ahead 19-12 on an attack error by Coastal, but the Chants pulled within one point following a kill by senior Erika Lightsey who made it a 23-22 game. High Point went ahead 24-22, but freshman Katie Martin would make it a 24-23 game on a kill. Courtney Johnk gave High Point the 25-23 win following a kill.
High Point carried the momentum into the early part of the second set, as they built up a 4-1 lead. Coastal scored the next three points to tie the game up at four apiece. The Panthers then went on a 5-1 run to build up a four point advantage. Once again the Chanticleers fought back and tied the game up at 10-10 and they took their first lead of the second set on the ensuing point following an attack error by High Point. Coastal would not give the lead up from that point on as they tied the match up at one a piece following a 25-17 win in the second set.
During the third set Coastal took a 6-1 lead to start the set. High Point was able to regroup and tie the set up at 8-8, but sophomore Meghan Laffin recorded a kill on the ensuing point to put the Chants back ahead. The score would go back and fourth until High Point used a 4-1 run to go ahead 23-19. High Point scored the next two points to take the third set 25-19.
In the first half of the fourth set the score remained close with neither team going ahead by more than three points. The Panthers went ahead 18-12 following a 5-1 run. Coastal was unable to respond and High Point took the fourth set 25-19.
Sophomore Kindra Bailey led the Chanticleers in kills and block with 11 and two respectfully. Fellow classmate Sam Skryd finished the evening with 35 assists and 13 digs. Freshman Lian Bernett recorded two service aces.
Leading the way for High Point was Michelle Chakirelis and Courtney Johnk who each tallied 12 kills. Johnk also finished with four blocks. Chelsea Davis posted a team high 15 digs, while Lauren Bell had 40 assists.
Coastal will play in its final regular season game tomorrow, Nov. 12, at 2:00 p.m. against Campbell University in Buies Creek, N.C.
