Coastal Notches 3-1 Win Over Charleston Southern

Chanticleers improve to 12-18 on the season and to 4-8 in the Big South

Charleston, S.C. - The Coastal Carolina volleyball team won 3-1 on Saturday, Nov. 5 over Charleston Southern. The Chants improved to 12-18 overall and are 4-8 in the Big South Conference.

Coastal improved their series record to 39-15 over the Buccaneers. Charleston Southern was playing in their final home match of the 2011 season.

The Chants fell in the opening set by a score of 25-22, before coming back to take the next three sets 25-23, 27-25 and 25-20.

Charleston Southern opened up the second set with a 3-1 run, but Coastal tied the match at six apiece following an attack error by the Buccaneers. The Chants took their first lead of the game on the ensuing point when freshman Lian Bernett recorded a service ace. The score remained close until the end with neither team going ahead by more than two points. Charleston Southern scored the final three points of the set to take the 25-22 win.

The second set was similar to the first set with the score remaining close. During the course of the set 14 ties took place and five lead changes occurred. Coastal took the largest lead of the set at three points on a kill by senior Erika Lightsey who put the score at 12-9. The Chanticleers used a 3-1 run to close the second set and win by a score of 25-23.

During the third set Coastal built an 11-5 lead and held a large lead until Charleston Southern was able to tie the set up at 21-21 on an attack error by Coastal. The Buccaneers took their second lead of the set when Wynter Davis recorded a kill on the ensuing point. Three ties and one lead change occurred following the point by Davis. Charleston Southern posted an error and sophomore Sam Skryd recorded a kill to give the Chanticleers the 27-25 victory.

In the fourth set Coastal used an 8-3 run to close out the game and take the 25-20 win. Sophomore Kindra Bailey scored the final point of the set on a kill, finishing with a total of four kills on eight attempts in the fourth set.

Bernett tallied 15 kills in the win, while Skryd recorded 42 assists and fellow classmate Lindsay Gill grabbed 13 digs and three service aces. Bailey had a team high two blocks.

Leading the way for the Buccaneers was Kayla Klinger with 13 kills, Amy Nokes finished with 27 assists and Ashley Higginbothem posted 14 digs. Davis had a match high four blocks. Sydney Tracy finished with two service aces.

Coastal will return to action on Friday, Nov. 11 when they travel to High Point, N.C. to play High Point University at 7 p.m.
