CONWAY - Coastal Carolina honored its seniors but it was a pair of sophomores, Gabriella Horvath and Lian Bernett, that led the Chanticleers to a 3-1 (25-17, 25-20, 25-27, 25-11) victory over Presbyterian Saturday night at The HTC Center.
Horvath had 16 kills and Bernett added 11 in the victory as Coastal improves to 14-10 overall, 7-3 in the Big South, while the Blue Hose fall to 7-19, 5-5. The Chanticleers will play its 2013 home finale Sunday, hosting Winthrop at 2 pm, before ending the regular season with three straight road matches.
The Chanticleers served up seven aces, compared to none for PC, and had 17 blocks, compared to only six by the Blue Hose.
Coastal set the stage early hitting an impressive .417 in the first game while Presbyterian only posted a .148 hitting percentage. Sophomore Eszter Nagy paced the Chanticleers with a .364 hitting percentage, having just two errors in 22 attacks, while Horvath tallied a .361 hitting percentage.
The Chants were in control throughout sets one and two. In the third set, Presbyterian, which out-dug the Chants 62-59, let a lead slip away before rallying to take the set 27-25.
Coastal got up early in the fourth and final set and the Blue Hose had a negative hitting percentage.
Senior Kindra Bailey came through with five kills, four solo blocks and two block assists. Classmate Meghan Laffin added six kills. Fellow seniors Lauren Alejo and Lindsay Gill each contributed 14 digs with Alejo adding 38 assists.
Rachel Hall led Presbyterian with 15 kills.
