Bernett Reaches 1,000 Kills as Coastal Downs Asheville

CONWAY - Lian Bernett became the 10th student-athlete in Coastal Carolina volleyball history to reach 1,000 kills on Saturday as the senior outside hitter led the match with 11 to propel the Chants to a 3-0 (25-12, 25-19, 25-17) victory over UNC Asheville at The HTC Center.

Bernett’s 1,005 career kills is 10th all-time in Coastal history, and she has an opportunity to become just the sixth Chanticleer to reach 1,000 career kills and digs as her 10 digs on Saturday brings her career total to 995. And, with two more service aces, Bernett can join Chelsy Kimes as the only Chanticleers with 1,000 kills, 1,000 digs, and 100 aces.

Saturday’s win extends Coastal’s unbeaten streak to 10 matches, and improves the Chants to 17-4, 9-0. Coastal is just one win away from tying the program record for most consecutive wins against conference opponents, and is closing in on the program record for most consecutive wins overall, set at 12 by the 2000 Chanticleers.

UNC Asheville falls to 11-9, 4-4 with Saturday’s loss.

Annayka Legros and Natasa Savovic joined Bernett with double figure kills as the pair put down 10 swings apiece. Legros additionally led the match with a .714 hitting percentage, and was one of five Chants to hit .400 or better.

Coastal hit .398 as a team – its second-highest total of the season – while limiting UNC Asheville to .186. Each team finished with five blocks.

Bernett notched five of her kills in the opening set as the Chants led from start to finish and easily took a 1-0 match lead. Her 1,000th kill came early in second set and gave Coastal a 4-3 lead. The Chants held the lead for the remainder of the set, using a .472 hitting percentage and receiving five kills apiece from Bernett and Legros to go up 2-0 in the match.

The final set saw another wire-to-wire performance from the Chants as Sara Boothe opened the game with an ace, and Hardeman finished it off with her eighth kill of the match. Hardeman and Savovic provided three kills apiece for the Chants in the final game, while Bernett tallied two solo blocks, and Nagy and Dora Lulic combined for a third.

Coastal remains in Conway next weekend to play its final two home matches of the 2015 season. The Chants square off against Winthrop at 7 p.m. on Friday before hosting Presbyterian on Saturday for a 2 p.m. match. Saturday’s match will include senior day ceremonies for Coastal’s two seniors, Bernett and Nagy.
