Radford, Va. - The Coastal Carolina volleyball team made a strong comeback against Radford on Saturday, but the Chanticleers came up just short falling 12-15 in the fifth set as the Highlanders took the match 3-2. Coastal Carolina is 8-15 on the season and 2-5 in Big South Conference play.
The two teams battled it out during the early part of the first set, as neither team was able to get ahead by more than a point. Radford used a 10-2 run to take the 17-9 lead and the Highlanders used a couple of more runs to take the first set by a score of 25-16.
During the opening of the second set, the score would again remain close. Radford used a run in the middle of the set to take the 14-7 advantage. The Highlanders then used a couple of 4-1 runs to build a 23-14 advantage before scoring the final two points of the set on a kill and a service ace to win 25-15 and to go ahead 2-0 in the match.
Coastal did not give up and took an early 6-3 lead in the third set. Radford tied the game at 6-6 and took their third lead of the set on the ensuing point. The Highlanders would not hold onto the lead for long, as the Chants tied the game up at nine apiece. Coastal would eventually use an 8-1 run to build up a 19-13 lead. Freshman Taylor Stafford closed out the set with a kill on an assist from sophomore Sam Skryd to give Coastal the 25-20 win.
Stafford helped the Chants build an early three point lead in the fourth set as she posted back-to-back kills that put the score at 8-5. Radford tied the set up at 9-9 following an attack error by Coastal. The Highlanders went ahead 20-17 following a 6-1 run. Coastal even the score at 21-21 on an attack error by Emily Carlin. The two teams would exchange points until Radford recorded a service error and an attack error to give Coastal the 27-25 win and tie the match up at two all.
In the fifth and final set the two teams were able to keep the score close with Radford using a 5-1 run to close the set out and take the 15-12 win.
Freshman Lian Bernett posted a double-double for Coastal recording 14 kills and 12 digs. Sophomore Lindsay Gill led the team in digs with 23 and also posted a team high three service aces. Freshman Katie Martin tallied four blocks, while senior Erika Lightsey posted 15 kills. Skryd finished the match with 39 assists and 10 digs.
Leading the way for Radford was Carly Fleming with 15 kills, Rachel Wiechecki who recorded 12 digs, Emma Deininger with six blocks and Leigh Myers posted 25 assists.
Coastal will return to action on Friday, October 21 as hosts to Big South Conference opponent UNC Asheville at 7:00 p.m. in Kimbel Arena.
