Orangeburg, S.C. - The Coastal volleyball team's two game win streak came to an end on Tuesday, as they fell to South Carolina State by a score of 3-1. The Chanticleers are 8-13 overall on the season following the loss.
The Lady Bulldogs built an early 9-5 lead over the Chanticleers in the first set, but Coastal Carolina came back to tie the game up at 14-14 following several errors by South Carolina State. Coastal took their second lead of the match on the ensuing point, as freshman Lian Bernett recorded a kill on an assist from sophomore Sam Skryd. South Carolina tied the game up at 16 apiece and took the lead for the second time on the next point. The Lady Bulldogs built up another four point lead, but once again the Chanticleers were able to make another comeback and regain the lead at 22-21 on a service ace by sophomore Lindsay Gill. Coastal Carolina was able to close the set on a 3-1 run to take the 25-21 win.
Coastal carried the momentum into the second set, as they went ahead 7-4. The Lady Bulldogs tied the set up at 11 all following a service error by the Chants. South Carolina State scored the next three points to go ahead 14-11. The Chants came within two points of South Carolina State, but the Lady Bulldogs would end up winning by a score of 25-21.
Heading into the third set, Coastal would see its only lead come on the opening point following a ball handling error by the Lady Bulldogs. South Carolina State was eventually able to build up a five point lead, going ahead 19-14 on a service ace. The Chants were unable to come any closer than three points and dropped the set by a final score of 25-18.
The Chants played the Lady Bulldogs tight during the fourth set until South Carolina State was able to go ahead 17-10. Coastal made a strong comeback, pulling within one point of the Lady Bulldogs following two kills by freshman Katie Martinand two attack errors by South Carolina State to put the score at 22-21. Although Coastal made a late run, the Lady Bulldogs came away with the 25-22 win.
Leading the way for Coastal was senior Erika Lightsey who had 11 kills, an attacking percentage of .409, four total blocks and one dig. Sophomore Kindra Bailey and Bernett each had 10 kills for the Chants. Gill tallied three service aces and 15 digs on the evening, while sophomore Sam Skrydrecorded 35 assists.
Coastal finished the match with an attacking percentage of .144, 42 kills, 40 assists, 51 digs, 11 blocks and eight service aces.
Desire Waller had a team high 14 kills for South Carolina State. Bria Brimmer posted 38 assists and three service aces, while Elizabeth Webb had 10 digs. Tiffane' Jackson recorded five blocks for the Lady Bulldogs.
The Chanticleers will return to action this weekend when they face Big South Conference opponent Liberty on Friday, October 14 at 7:00 p.m. in Lynchburg, Va.
