Freshman Meghan Laffin On Her Career-High Night

CONWAY, S.C. - The Coastal Carolina University volleyball kept its undefeated home mark alive with a 3-0 (25-10, 25-15, 25-17) sweep over Gardner-Webb at Kimbel Arena on Friday, Oct. 1.  The Chanticleers are now 6-0 at home with a 9-8 overall record and 2-1 in the Big South.  The Runnin' Bulldogs fall to 4-13 and 0-4 in the conference. 

Freshman Meghan Laffin recorded a new career high with 11 kills, hitting .647 on the night and added six service aces.  Erika Lightsey tallied eight kills while Lauren Alejo dished out 25 assists and registered two service aces.  Chelsy Kimes finished the night with seven kills, 10 digs and two aces. 

For the Bulldogs, Lauren Wilcox led with six kills and two solo blocks while Evan Moffitt recorded 18 assists.  Melissa Richie chipped in three service aces. 

In the first set, Coastal held Gardner-Webb to just 10 points, hitting .538 as a team.  Coastal opened up with a 12-4 lead and never looked back as three Chants registered three kills a piece in the set.  At 18-8, the Chanticleers went on a 7-2 run to end the set.  Alejo tallied 10 out of her 25 assists and Kindra Bailey set a new career-high with two kills. 

Early in the second set, the Chanticleers found themselves down 4-1, but the squad fought back to tie the set at 5-all.  Following the tie, Laffin came alive, serving 11 points in a row with five service aces, including four service aces in a row.  The Bulldogs' Molly Rhyne ended the run with a kill at 17-7, but the deficit was too much for Gardner-Webb recover from.  Wilcox, Richie and Rhyne all posted two kills in the set as the Bulldogs tried to contain the Chants and Laffin, who finished with five kills and two blocks.  At 20-12, Coastal went on a 5-3 run to end the set 25-15. 

Starting the third set, both teams battled back and fourth, forcing eight ties and three lead changes.  The final tie came at 10-all with Coastal going on 6-0 run to take the lead for the final time.  Gardner-Webb came to within four points at 18-14, but that was as close as the Bulldogs would get as the Chants finished the set on a 7-3 run to win the match.  Megan Bickford tallied four kills on four attempts in the set for Coastal. 

Coastal returns to the court Saturday, Oct. 2 at 2 p.m. to host Presbyterian. 

Gardner-Webb will step out of conference play to take on Davidson on Tuesday, Oct. 5 at 7 p.m.
