Coastal Sweeps UTA in Home Opener
CONWAY - The Coastal Carolina volleyball team made its home debut Friday night at the HTC Center with a three-set sweep (25-18, 25-17, 25-20) of UTA.
The shutout marks Coastal's third straight victory, evens its overall record to 6-6 and keeps the Chants perfect in Sun Belt matches at 3-0. UTA, meanwhile, falls to 7-9, 1-2.
Leah Hardeman's fourth straight double-double, and ninth of the season, led the Chants in the win. The senior outside hitter tallied 15 kills and 13 digs with a .433 hitting percentage. Aristea Tontai and Larissa Dos Santos added seven kills each, including a .333 hitting percentage for the latter.
Coastal hit .287 as a team to UTA's .118.
Coastal opened the match hitting .297 in the first set, receiving five kills from Hardeman and four from Kyla Manning. An 8-3 Coastal run gave the Chants a 16-8 advantage, and UTA errors helped the Chants remain comfortably ahead for the remainder of the set. Coastal finished with four services in the opening game, including two from Alvis.
The Chants' .341 hitting percentage in the middle frame propelled them to an eight-point set win. Hardeman put down another five kills, while Dos Santos added four and Tontai contributed three. Coastal finished the set strong with an 8-3 run after surrendering four straight points.
Coastal led the final set from start to finish as Boothe served the Chants to a 5-0 lead. UTA managed to trim Coastal's advantage to a single point, but five straight points on the serve of Hardeman pushed the Chants comfortably in front, 19-13, allowing them to finish off the match.
The Chants return to action at the HTC Center on Sunday for a 12:30 pm match versus Texas State.
