Volleyball Drops First Big South Match 3-1 to Liberty

LYNCHBURG, Va. – The Coastal Carolina University volleyball team fell to 2008 Big South Champion Liberty 3-1 (25-21, 18-25, 18-25, 17-25) in its first meeting of the season. The Chanticleers fall to 1-1 in the Big South and 6-8 overall while Liberty improves to 2-0 in the Big South and 7-7 overall.
Chelsy Kimes recorded yet another double-double with 12 kills and 10 digs while also picking up two blocks and one service ace. Jill Nyhof, who is currently ranked second in the NCAA in blocks per set, picked up four blocks in the match. Megan Pollard tied her season-high with 23 digs, while Megan Bickford with a season-high four blocks.
In the first set, Liberty came out strong and went out to a 10-4 lead before the Chants went on a 7-0 run to tie the set at 13-all. There were three more ties until Coastal Carolina took the final lead at 17-16 and never allowed the Flames to comeback and picked up the first set to lead the match 1-0. Sierra Livesay led the Chants with five kills and a .444 attack percentage in the set while Megan Pollard finished with nine digs. Neither team hit well with Coastal Carolina finishing with a .176 team attack percentage compared to Liberty’s team attack percentage of .152.
Coastal Carolina led in the early part of the second set until the Flames went on a 10-2 lead to put them up 16-10. Liberty would only allow Coastal Carolina to score eight more points before the Flames tied up the match 1-1. Chelsy Kimes led the set for the Chants with four kills and Jill Nyhof had two kills and an attack percentage of .667.
With the match tied at 1-1, Liberty went out to an early 3-1 lead, but Coastal Carolina battled back to tie the set at 8-all. Although the Chanticleers never had the lead, they kept it close and managed to tie the set twice with the final tie coming at 14-all. After the final tie, the Flames went to work and held Coastal Carolina to four points while they took the lead of the match at 2-1. Nyhof added two blocks on the set, but it was not enough as Liberty held the Chants to a .081 team attack percentage.
In the fourth and final set of the match, Liberty again went out to a 3-1 lead and never let Coastal Carolina lead or tie up the set. Megan Bickford and Kimes led the Chants with three kills on the set, but Coastal Carolina was held to a .077 team attack percentage while Liberty had a team attack percentage of .292.
The Chanticleers return home as they take on South Carolina State on Tues., Sept. 29 at 6 p.m.
