KNOXVILLE, Tenn. - The Coastal Carolina volleyball team captured the 2013 Lady Vol Invitational title Saturday evening after defeating Jacksonville State University 3-0 on Friday, topping ACC member Georgia Tech 3-1 Saturday afternoon and falling 3-1 to Tennessee Saturday evening. Both Georgia Tech and Coastal finished with 2-1 records in the tournament but CCU was awarded the title due to their 3-1 victory over the Yellow Jackets.
The Chants are now 7-6 on the season while the Yellow Jackets sit at 5-6 and the Volunteers are 8-6.
In CCU's first match Saturday the Chants had a team hitting percentage of .203 while holding the Yellow Jackets to a .096 hitting percentage.
The Chants captured the first set 25-18, second set 25-22 and fourth set 25-17 while the Yellow Jackets won the third set 25-22.
CCU was led by redshirt sophomore Lian Bernett who had 13 kills, 10 digs and two blocks. Nagy added 10 kills and two blocks. Sophomore Gabriella Horvath chipped in nine kills, 15 digs, two blocks and three service aces.
Alejo dished out 42 assists while digging up five balls and collecting a block. Gill led the team with 22 digs.
In the nightcap the Chants hit just .154 as a team while the Volunteers compiled a .255 hitting percentage.
Senior Kindra Bailey led with 12 kills, two blocks and two service aces. Nagy had nine kills and nine blocks including two solo stops. Horvath chipped in eight kills, six digs and three blocks.
The Chants out-blocked the Volunteers 12-9 but it was not enough as the Vols won the first set 25-15, the second set 25-23 and the fourth set 25-16. CCU captured the third set 25-19.
Coastal will return to action Friday, Sept. 27 as the Chants travel to Winthrop to open up Big South Conference play.
