KENNESAW, Ga. – The Coastal Carolina University volleyball team closed out the Kennesaw State Owl Invitational with a 3-1 (16-25, 25-22, 15-25, 10-25) loss to No. 25 Ohio State on Saturday, Sept. 18. The Chanticleers fall to 6-7 overall on the season while the Buckeyes improve to 11-1.
Chelsy Kimes led the offense with eight kills and Megan Bickford was close behind, finishing with seven kills. Lauren Alejo and Kelsie Mauck shared the setting duties, dishing out 12 and 11 assists, respectively. Defensively, Bickford posted three blocks and Lindsay Gill led the team with 15 digs.
In the first set, the Buckeyes went out to an early 7-1 lead and never looked back as Coastal could not get its offense together. The Chants were held to just six kills in the set with Bickford leading the team with two kills and two blocks.
Coastal came out looking like a different team in the second set, winning the set 25-22 and handing Ohio State its first set loss of the tournament. Both teams stayed close, forcing 11 ties and four lead changes with the Chanticleers taking the final lead at 15-14. After taking the lead for the final time, Coastal went on a 5-3 run, but Ohio State did not go away easily. The Buckeyes tried to build a late comeback, but at 24-22, Bickford ended the set with a kill from Alejo. Kimes and Bickford each registered three kills a piece in the set and three other Chants joined in the action with two kills.
The third and fourth sets were all Ohio State. The Chants led only once in the third set at 3-2 before the Buckeyes went on a 12-3 run to take the lead for good. In the fourth set, Ohio State went to an 18-8 lead and Coastal Carolina could never regain its momentum to post a comeback.
The Chanticleers return home to begin Big South Conference play against Charleston Southern on Tuesday, Sept. 21 at Kimbel Arena.
