Coastal Volleyball Falls at Duke, 3-0
DURHAM, N.C. - The Coastal Carolina volleyball started its final weekend of nonconference matches Friday, falling in three sets (18-25, 23-25, 15-25) at Duke.
The loss drops Coastal to 3-5 overall as it prepares for its nonconference match Saturday night at 24th-ranked North Carolina.
Duke was led in the sweep by the trio of Natalie Schilling, Samantha Amos and Payton Schwantz. Schilling led the match with 13 kills while hitting .611 and adding three blocks. Amos put down 11 kills at a .733 pace, and Schwantz landed 10 shots with a .444 hitting percentage.
As a team Duke hit .382 to Coastal's .282, while also holding advantages in kills (48-36) and digs (35-22).
Coastal led in team blocks, 6-5, including five blocks by senior Leah Levert.
Duke broke a 6-6 tie early in the first set by winning five of the next six points to take a lead it would hold on to for the remainder of the game. Amos had five kills in the set for Duke, while Schilling and Cadie Bates each contributed three.
The second set was the closest of the match as Coastal hit .379 to Duke's .333.Tontai led the Chants with six kills in the set, and Levert recorded a pair of solo blocks. Coastal never led in the frame, however, despite managing to even the score on six occasions.
Duke led the entirety of the third set, hitting .433 on the offensive side while racking up 14 digs to Coastal's eight defensively. A 7-1 run early in the set put the Blue Devils ahead 10-4, and they would go on to lead by as many as 10 points to close out the match.
