GREENVILLE, NC - The Coastal Carolina volleyball team picked up its second win of the season with a 3-2 victory over the host of the East Carolina Invitational. The Chanticleers fell in their first match of the day 3-1 to UMBC. Junior Meghan Laffinwas named to the All-Tournament team after posting 19 kills on the final day of the event.
The Chants fell in a highly competitive match with UMBC with game scores of 26-24, 22-25, 25-19 and 25-23. The nightcap proved to be the most competitive match of the tournament as CCU dropped the first two sets 25-14 and 25-18 before roaring back with three-straight wins 25-21, 25-22 and 15-8.
Coastal's record moves to 2-7 on the season while UMBC improved to 7-9 and ECU fell to 1-11.
Freshman Gabriella Horvath led the Chants in the opening match with 16 kills, nine digs and a block assist. Junior Kindra Bailey added 10 kills and seven blocks including two solo stops. Junior Lauren Alejo posted another double-double with 35 assists and 10 digs while adding three block assists. Sophomore Jenna Orner led the team with 16 digs while junior Sam Skrydadded 10.
In the Chants lone win of the tourney Laffin led the way with 19 kills and a .368 attack percentage. Horvath added 13 kills and eight digs while Bailey had 11 kills and three block assists. Orner led the way in digs with 19 once again while Skryd added 14. Alejo had 49 assists and seven digs.
The Chanticleers will return to action this Friday, Sept. 21 at 7 p.m. as they open up The HTC Center and Big South Conference play against Winthrop.
