CONWAY - The Coastal Carolina volleyball team opened up the East Carolina Invitational with a 3-0 loss to Marshall University. Junior Lauren Alejo posted a double-double with 13 assists and 11 digs.
The Chants’ record fell to 1-6 on the season while the Thundering Herd improved to 10-4. Marshall took the match in straight sets 25-14, 25-19 and 25-18.
Freshman Monica Hall led the Chanticleers with five kills while adding three block assists and three digs. Sophomore Katie Martin and freshman Gabriella Horvath each added four kills to the Chants effort.
The Chants out-blocked the Herd 9-6 with junior Kindra Bailey leading the way with two solo blocks and three block assists.
CCU battled with Marshall early in the first set but with the Chants leading 8-7 the Herd began a 16-2 run to take a commanding 23-10 lead. The Chants scored four of the last six points but it would not be enough as Marshall went on to win the set 25-14.
Marshall began the second set with a 5-1 run and held the lead the rest of the set. CCU was able to cut the lead to two at 6-4, 7-5 and 17-15 but that would be as close as the Chants would get as the Herd won 25-19.
The third set was much like the first with the Chants hanging in early and the Herd pulling away with a late run. The Herd trailed just twice in the set at 4-3 and 5-4. Marshall would close out the match with a 25-18 victory.
The Chanticleers will return to action tomorrow, Sept. 15 at 10 a.m. and 7 p.m. as they take on UMBC and host East Carolina.
