Chanticleers Fall 3-0 in Match Against UNC Wilmington

Coastal has opportunities late in second and third set

WILMINGTON, N.C. - Coastal Carolina took part in their first non-tournament match of the season on Tuesday when they went on the road to face UNC Wilmington. The Chanticleers were looking to get back in the win column, but the Seahawks took the match 3-0 to put Coastal at 4-7 on the season.

UNC Wilmington opened the first set on a 6-1 run, but Coastal would respond a short time later with a 5-0 run that put the score at 9-7.

The Seahawks made a few small runs at the Chanticleers to build a five point lead. Coastal was able to come within three points of UNC Wilmington, but the Seahawks used one last 5-0 run to pull away and take the first set 25-14.

During the second set Coastal came out strong taking an early 7-3 lead. Sophomore Sam Skryd and fellow classmate Meghan Laffinled the way for the Chanticleer's, as Skryd earned two points on her serve and Laffin scored two points on kills.

UNC Wilmington would use a 6-0 run to tie the match up at 14-14, but they would have an attack error on the ensuing point to give Coastal the advantage back at 15-14.

The Seahawks were able to take their first lead of the match at 16-15 following a kill by McKenzie Keightley and they went ahead by three before Coastal was able to make a late run to tie the set at 22-22. UNC Wilmington had two errors and freshman Lian Bernettrecorded a service ace to tie the match.

Coastal was only able to score one more point following the tie on a block by freshman Katie Martin and senior Erika Lightsey, as UNC Wilmington was able to go ahead 2-0 in the match following a 25-23 win in the second set.

In the third set the Seahawks jumped out to a 4-1 advantage, but Coastal tied the game at 8-8 when Skryd and Martin blocked Jennifer Mallard. Skryd and senior Erika Lightsey scored the next two points to give the Chanticleers their first lead of the set as they went ahead 10-8.

The set would see its second tie at 11-11 and Coastal would regain the lead on the ensuing point when the Seahawks posted an attack error.

Both teams would exchange points until UNC Wilmington recorded a service error and Lightsey posted another kill to put the Chanticleers ahead 17-15.

UNC Wilmington fought back and tied the match up at 17-17 and they took a short lead at 18-17 before Coastal was able to score the next four points to go back ahead 21-18.

The Seahawks made a late run and put the score at 24-22 on a kill by Keightley. Coastal was able to put the score at 24-23 on a kill by Laffin, but UNC Wilmington took the set 25-23 on a kill of their own to take the match.

Laffin led the Chanticleers in kills and blocks with eight and three respectfully, recording a team high 9.5 points. Skryd had 19 assists, 11 digs and two service aces on the evening.

Christie Laite had 16 kills and tied Siera Young with four blocks to lead the Seahawks. Mallard finished the match with two service aces and 10 digs, while Kelsey Bending collected 24 assists.

Coastal will return to action on Friday, Sept. 16 when they play Davidson at 7:00 p.m. in the Davidson Tournament, which will also take place on Saturday, Sept. 17 in Davidson, N.C. The Chanticleers will play Norfolk State at 10:00 a.m. and North Carolina A&T at 3:00 p.m. on Saturday.
