CONWAY, S.C. - The Coastal Carolina University volleyball team blanked the Citadel 3-0 (25-23, 25-16, 25-14) in its home opener at Kimbel Arena Friday, Sept. 10.  It was the first match of the Comfort Suites Coastal Carolina Invitational for the Chanticleers, who improve to 3-5 on the season.

Senior Chelsy Kimes led the team with 14 kills and 11 digs for her sixth double-double of the season.  Freshman Meghan Laffin was key for the Chants, adding seven kills while senior Megan Bickford tallied four blocks on the night.  Freshman Lauren Alejo and junior Kelsie Mauck dished out 17 and 15 assists, respectively.

Coastal out hit the Bulldogs every set, including hitting above .300 in sets two and three and registered 10 service aces as a team, a season-high.

Both teams were evenly matched in the first set, forcing seven ties and four lead changes.  After the final tie at 15-all, Coastal went on a 7-2 run, making the Citadel call a timeout.  Coming out of the timeout, the Bulldogs answered with a kill, but the Chants won the next two points to take a 24-18 lead.  The Citadel did not go away easily as it went on a 5-0 run to shrink the Coastal lead to one at 24-23.  Amanda Russell ended the set with a kill from Alejo.

Coastal took control from the beginning in both the second and third sets.  After winning the first point in both sets, the Chanticleers never allowed the Citadel to tie the set or take the lead.  In the second set, Coastal went on an 11-3 run, putting the set out of reach for the Bulldogs.  The third set was similar to the second with the Chants going out to an early 7-1 lead and keeping the momentum going, winning the match in three straight sets.

The Chanticleers return to the court for day two of the Comfort Suites Coastal Carolina Invitational Saturday, Sept. 11, as they take on Norfolk State at noon and USC Upstate at 6 p.m.
