Volleyball Falls in Five Sets to Robert Morris

Coastal comes up short in first match of JMU Days Inn Invitational

HARRISONBURG, Va. - During the opening match of the James Madison University Days Inn Invitational, the Coastal Carolina (2-3) volleyball team suffered a tough 3-2 loss to Robert Morris (1-3) Friday.

Senior Erika Lightsey led the Chants in kills with 21, while sophomore Lindsay Gill tallied 19 digs and freshman Katie Martin had three blocks, including four block assists. Senior Kelsie Mauck finished the match with five service aces and 44 assists.

Coastal opened the match taking an early 4-1 lead with Martin picking up a kill and a block assist in two of the four points. The Colonials fought back to tie the game up at six all and the two teams would battle back and forth before Robert Morris was able to take the 13-10 advantage. Mauck and Lightsey led a Chanticleer rallied, as Coastal was able to tie the game at 14-14. The Chants kept the momentum, scoring the next seven points to go ahead 21-14 before eventually winning the first set, 25-18.

The Colonials came out strong in the second set building a 5-2 lead. The Chanticleers were able to re-group and go on a four-point run to take their first lead of the second set at 6-5. Coastal's largest lead of the second set was three points, which came on two separate occasions, but Robert Morris tied the game at 18-18 and would go on to take the set 25-22.

Robert Morris opened the third set by scoring the first five points and the Chanticleers were unable to recover, allowing the Colonials to take a 2-1 lead in the match following a 25-15 victory.

After falling behind 5-2 early in the fourth set, Coastal Carolina responded to tie the game at 6-6 and would eventually build up a 16-12 lead with Bailey, freshman Taylor Stafford, Lightsey and Mauck leading the way. Robert Morris tried to make a run to close the match at the end of the fourth set, but Coastal was able to hold the Colonials off and tie the match up at 2-2 with a 25-23 win.

The fifth and final set opened with both teams battling early. Then, with the game tied 6-6, Robert Morris was able to then score the next seven points to build a 13-6 lead. The gap was too much to make up for Coastal, as Robert Morris took the set 15-9.

Lindsey Monger had a double-double for the Colonials with 21 kills and 11 digs. Melissa Bograd led Robert Morris in digs with 19 and Hannah Veith had three total blocks. Hannah Hoffman posted 45 assists in five sets.

Next up for Coastal will be a match against tournament host James Madison on Saturday (Sept. 3) at 12:30 p.m., followed by a match against Lehigh at 5:00 p.m.
