Chants Split on Final Day of CCU Invitational

CONWAY - The Coastal Carolina volleyball team picked up its first win of the season with a 3-2 victory over Wofford in the first match of day inside The HTC Center. CCU then went on to fall 3-1 to Big Ten member and CCU Invitational Champion Iowa. The Chants were led by sophomore Eszter Nagy on the day as she totaled 24 kills over the two matches. Redshirt sophomore Lian Bernett added 21 kills to finish second on the team.
After a day in which she surpassed the 1,000 career dig mark, redshirt junior Lindsay Gill led the team with 48 digs over the two matches and earned herself a spot on the All-Tournament Team.
The Chants opened the day with a come-from-behind victory over Wofford. CCU fell in the first set 25-15 before rebounding for a 25-18 victory in set two. The Terriers took the third set by the slimmest of margins, 27-25, before CCU evened up the match with a 25-20 fourth set win. The Chants sealed the victory in the fifth with a 15-10 margin.
Iowa took the opening two sets of CCU’s evening match by scores of 25-20. CCU picked up its lone set win in the third, 25-22, before Iowa took home the crown, 25-23.
Senior Meghan Laffin led the way against Wofford with 15 kills and six digs. Bernett added 11 kills, seven digs and pair of blocks while Nagy had 10 kills and four blocks. Nagy recorded a .421 attack percentage but it was senior Kindra Bailey who led the way with a .571 percentage to go along with nine kills and three blocks. Senior Lauren Alejo dished out 46 assists and Gill dug up 22 balls.
The Chants out-hit the Terriers .277-.252 and out-blocked them 9-1.
Nagy led the way against the Hawkeyes with 14 kills and two blocks including one solo while compiling an attack percentage of .500. Bernett added 10 kills, 13 digs and two blocks. Gill continued her strong play with 26 digs and three assists while Alejo dished out 39 assists and picked up 10 digs.
Iowa compiled an attack percentage of .218 while the Chants had a .173 attack percentage. Iowa also out-blocked the Chants 10-7.
The Hawkeyes’ Alessandra Dietz had a match high seven blocks on her way to tournament MVP honors.
The Chants will return to action next weekend as they travel to Charleston, S.C. for the College of Charleston Invitational. CCU will battle the hosts CofC, Big Ten member Indiana and South Carolina State.
