Chanticleers Earn First Win of the Forman Era

PITTSBURGH - The Coastal Carolina volleyball team split a pair of matches in the final day of the Panther Invitational hosted by the University of Pittsburgh. The Chants opened the day with a 3-2 loss to Butler before picking up their first win of the season over Howard, 3-0. The win marked the first for head coach Jozsef Forman at CCU.
CCU fell to Butler 22-25, 25-8, 25-17, 23-25 and 15-12. The Chants then swept Howard 26-24, 25-11 and 25-8.
Junior Lauren Alejo was named to the All-Tournament team after leading the team in assists in all three matches. She had 37 assists, nine digs and a pair of blocks in the match against Butler and then had 16 assists and seven digs in just three sets against Howard.
Freshman Gabriella Horvath continued her strong play in the tournament against Butler while leading the team with 13 kills and 14 digs. Junior Meghan Laffin added 11 kills and five digs. Senior Jamie DiMaggio led the team in digs with 21 while sophomore Jenna Orner added 12.
In the Howard match sophomore Lian Bernett led the team with eight kills and eight digs which were both team-highs. Junior Kindra Bailey and freshman Gabriella Horvath each added seven kills. Bailey had a tremendous match getting seven kills on just 11 attacks good for a .636 attack percentage. The only Chant to hit at a higher percentage was freshman Melissa McGwin who had five kills on seven attacks for a .714 attack percentage.
The Chanticleers will return to action Friday, Sept. 14 at 4 p.m. as they travel to the East Carolina Invitational to battle Marshall, UMBC and East Carolina.
