CONWAY - Redshirt junior Lindsay Gill used a 30-dig performance to bring her career total to 1,023 in Coastal Carolina’s season-opening five-set loss to Youngstown State Friday evening inside The HTC Center. The Chants fell 3-2 to the Penguins in the opening match of the CCU Invitational.
Gill missed the entire 2012 season due to an injury but she came out firing in 2013. The 30 digs is the most by a Chanticleer since Sept. 4, 2010 when Gill had 30 digs against Long Island.
CCU dropped the opening set of the match 25-20 before rattling off 25-23 and 25-20 victories in sets two and three. The Penguins picked up a 25-21 victory in the fourth set before downing the Chants 16-14 in the fifth and deciding set.
Another Chanticleer returning after missing almost the entire 2012 season led the Chants in kills as redshirt sophomore Lian Bernett totaled 14 kills on 42 attempts. She also picked up 11 digs for her first double-double of the season. Freshman Miona Milovanovic finished with 13 kills on 39 attacks.
The Chants compiled a .172 attack percentage compared to YSU’s .200. YSU also converted 11 service aces and out-blocked the Chants 13-10.
The Penguins had three players reach double-digit kills including Alexis Egler, Aly Ryan and Jackie Carlisle.
The Chants will return to action tomorrow morning at 11 a.m. as they take on Wofford. CCU will also battle Iowa at 7 p.m. tomorrow night. Both matches will take place inside The HTC Center.
