WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - The Coastal Carolina University volleyball team fell short to the Dayton Flyers, 3-1 (25-22, 23-25, 16-25, 23-25), in their first match of the 2009 season, Aug. 28 at the Mortar Board Premier hosted by Purdue University.
The Chanticleers opened strong and captured its first set win of the season, 25-22. The team finished with an attack percentage of .360 and junior Chelsy Kimes (Munster, Ind./Munster) led the Chants with four blocks. Kimes finished the night with a team-high 13 kills.
Senior Jill Nyhof (Alpharetta, Ga./Northview) provided a career-high 13 blocks and five kills for the Chants and sophomore Kelsie Mauck (Muncie, Ind./Delta) added a game-high 32 assists and seven digs. Freshman Sierra Livesay (Riverside, Calif./Poly Tech) saw her first action as a Chanticleer and helped both offensively and defensively, finishing the night with her first collegiate career double-double of 11 kills and 15 digs.
Coastal Carolina stayed close in the second set, but was never able to get the lead. They came within one point twice in the closing parts, including 24-23, before Dayton got the final point to win the set 25-23 and tie the match, 1-1. The Chanticleers continued to fight in the third set, but could not seem to get their rhythm going allowing the Flyers to control the set, 25-16, to pull ahead 2-1 in the match.
The Chants looked for the equalizer in the fourth set jumping to an early 6-0 lead. From then on, there were 10 ties and Coastal Carolina went point for point with Dayton until the Flyers launched a late attack to win the final set 25-23, giving them the match win.
Although Coastal Carolina led in match digs 63-52, the Flyers finished with a team attack percentage .173 to a Coastal .150. Dayton's 10 service aces also provided an advantage for the Flyers as they held the Chants to only four.
Dayton's Lindsay Fletemier had a game-high 18 kills to help the Flyers to their first win. Kacie Hausfeld added 21 assists and Paige Vargas finished with 19 digs.
Coastal Carolina returns to the court for its second match of the Mortar Board Premier on Aug. 29 against No. 19 Purdue at 10 a.m. Live stats will be available at www.GoCCUSports.com.
