UNC Greensboro Box Score / North Carolina A&T Box Score
GREENSBORO, N.C. - The Coastal Carolina volleyball team opened the 2011 season with a 3-1 win over tournament host UNC Greensboro and a 3-0 victory against North Carolina A&T at the UNC Greensboro Tournament on Friday.
The Chanticleers won their first two matches of the season for the first time since defeating Winston-Salem State 3-0 and University of Maryland Eastern Shores 3-2 in the Virginia Tech Hokie Invitational in 2008.
Coastal Carolina 3, UNC Greensboro 1
Freshman Lian Bernett led the way for the Chanticleers with her first collegiate career double-double, recording 13 kills and 14 digs. Senior Erika Lightsey paced Coastal in kills with 15 and sophomore Lauren Alejo had 44 assists. Freshman Katie Martin and Bernett, along with sophomore Kindra Bailey, each had four block assists.
During the first set, the two sides went back and forth before UNC Greensboro closed out the first set with a 7-2 run to take the 25-20 win.
Coastal took an early 6-3 lead in the second set, but the Spartans would pull within a point. Martin then made it a 10-7 game on a kill with an assist from Alejo to put the Chanticleers back ahead by three.
UNC Greensboro tied the game at 14-14 following a Coastal attack error. The Spartans took their largest lead of the second set at 20-18, but Coastal would go on a four point run to take the 22-20 before eventually taking the second set by a score of 25-22.
The third set was another back and fourth game early on until the Chanticleers went on an 8-2 run to take the 20-14 lead. Coastal Carolina was able to hold off the Spartans during the remainder of the set, as they would go on to take a 25-19 win.
In the fourth set, UNC Greensboro started off strong by taking a 6-2 lead. Coastal was able to gradually make a comeback and tie the game up at 12 apiece. The Spartans regained the lead on the next point and would hold onto that advantage until the Chanticleers tied the game up for the second time at 22-22. Coastal would have to make one more comeback before taking the set 27-25 and the match 3-1.
Ariel Newman led UNC Greensboro in kills with 14, as Ari Lysacek recorded 24 assists, Karrian Chambers tallied 15 digs and Morgan Freeman had a total of six blocks.
Coastal Carolina 3, North Carolina A&T 0
During Coastal Carolina's second match of the UNC Greensboro Tournament the Chanticleers were able to sweep the Aggies 25-16, 25-17, and 25-10.
Lightsey recorded a team high 12 kills, while Alejo posted 21 assists, sophomore Lindsay Gill had seven digs and Bernett had two block assists.
Coastal used several small runs, including a four point run on two separate occasions, in the first set to take the 25-16 win.
North Carolina A&T jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the second set. Coastal tied the game at 11 all following a Bernett kill on an Alejo assist. The Chanticleers then went on a 6-2 run to take the 17-13 lead. Coastal closed out the set by going on an 8-4 run to win 25-17.
Coastal came out strong in the third set, as they went on a 12-3 run. The Chanticleers were able to hold the momentum through the remainder of the set on their way to a 25-10 victory.
Tatiana Cooper led the Aggies in kills and digs with nine and seven respectively. Chelsea Fox recorded 21 assists in the match.
Coastal Carolina will face Evansville (1 pm) and East Tennessee State (5 pm) on Saturday, August 27 in day two of the UNC Greensboro Tournament.
