CONWAY - The Coastal Carolina volleyball team opened its 2012 campaign with a 3-0 loss to Clemson University at the Big Orange Bash. The Chanticleers fell in straight sets by scores of 25-18, 25-15 and 25-12. CCU was led by sophomore Katie Martin who had seven kills on just 10 attacks. The match marked the first stint on the CCU sideline for head coach Jozsef Forman.

Sophomore Lian Bernett added six kills and four digs to the Chants’ effort. Junior captain Lauren Alejo and junior Sam Skryd split time at setter with each tallying 11 assists. Senior Jamie DiMaggio led the team in digs with nine.

Clemson was led by Moneshia Simmons who tallied 13 kills while Kristin Faust added 10.

CCU struggled offensively hitting just .115 as a team while the Tigers tallied a .373 attack percentage. The Chants also gave up seven service aces while striking for just two of their own.

Coastal’s best set of the match came in the opening stanza as the Chants hit .241 and had just four errors but the Tigers would not be out done as they hit .367 and had five errors.

Clemson jumped out to a quick 10-3 lead in the opening set and CCU was never able to recover. The Chants were able to cut the Tigers lead to just four late in the set but a 3-0 run ended CCU’s hope for a comeback as the Tigers took set one 25-18.

Coastal took the early lead in set two as freshman Eszter Nagy opened the game with a kill off an assist from Alejo. With the Chants holding a 9-8 lead the Tigers began an 8-3 run to take a 16-12 lead. Coastal would score just three more points the rest of the set as the Tigers took set two, 25-15.

The third set began much like the second with the Chants taking the early lead on a kill by Bernett and a service ace from Skryd. After the Tigers tied it up at two a pair of Clemson errors gave the Chants another two-point lead. A quick 5-0 run by the Tigers put Coastal in a 7-4 hole which the Chants would never climb out of. The Tigers went on to claim the match with a 25-12 third set victory.

Coastal will return to action tomorrow morning as the Chants take on Xavier University in CCU’s second match of the Big Orange Bash in Clemson, S.C. at 10 a.m. CCU will also battle South Carolina State tomorrow at 4 p.m.  Xavier defeated South Carolina State 3-0 in the opening match of the Big Orange Bash earlier today.
