Volleyball Opens Season With Exhibition at #12 Florida
GAINESVILLE, Fla. - The defending Sun Belt Conference champion Coastal Carolina volleyball team saw its first action of the 2017 season Saturday afternoon as the Chanticleers took on 12th-ranked Florida in an exhibition match, the first to be played in the Gators' newly renovated Exactech Arena.
The two sides played three full sets, with Florida winning 25-11, 25-18, 25-23. A 15-point fourth set was then played, which the Gators won 15-12.
Freshman Kyla Manning put down a team-best nine kills, followed by Leah Levert with seven and Kinga Windisch and Larissa Dos Santos with five each. Dos Santos hit at a .364 pace, while Levert followed at .333.
Coastal recorded six team blocks, which included four assists and a solo effort from Levert to bring her team-leading point total to 11
Junior transfer Sydney Alvis had 17 digs in her first outing in a Chanticleer uniform, one short of the match high set by Florida's Caroline Knop.
Senior setter Kate Federico accounted for 20 of Coastal's 27 total assists.
With their lone exhibition match over, the Chanticleers are set to begin the regular season with an opening tournament at TCU. Coastal takes on UTSA on Friday before facing the host Horned Frogs on Saturday in Fort Worth, Texas.
