CONWAY - The Coastal Carolina volleyball team has played in two events this spring and has one more scheduled for April 13. The Chants opened up their non-traditional season with a 4-1 victory over visiting Big 12 member West Virginia University before traveling to in-state rival South Carolina for a one-day tournament featuring the Gamecocks, USC Upstate and Georgia Southern.

Coastal opened the match against WVU by winning the first two sets 25-18 and 25-21. The Mountaineers took the third set 25-23 before the Chants closed out the match with wins in the fourth and fifth sets, 25-21 and 15-10. Rising sophomores Eszter Nagy and Gabriella Horvath along with rising senior Lauren Alejo led the way for the Chants in the victory.

In Columbia the Chants opened the day with a pair of set wins over Georgia Southern before splitting with USC Upstate. The Gamecocks then swept the Chants in the final match of the day. Rising junior Katie Martin and rising senior Meghan Laffin were the standout athletes for the Chants in Columbia.

CCU's final tournament of the spring will take place Saturday, April 13 at N.C. State. The Chants will battle host N.C. State, Duke and North Carolina. Both N.C. State and North Carolina advanced to the NCAA Tournament in 2012. The Tar Heels finished the 2012 campaign ranked 18th in RPI while N.C State finished ranked 44th and Duke ended up in 80th.

The Chants return all but two members from the 2012 squad and will add three talented freshmen in the fall.
