COLUMBIA - The Coastal Carolina volleyball team opened up its Spring this season in a tournament at the University of South Carolina this past weekend.
The tournament format was set up so that the teams playing competed in two games, the first team to score 25 points by two points won the set.
The Chanticleers opened the tournament against ACC member, Wake Forest. During the first game the Demon Decons won 25-23, but the Chanticleers took the second game winning 25-23.
Coastal then played Kennesaw State and won the first game 25-20. Kennesaw State pulled off the 25-20 win during the second game.
In the third match, the Chanticleers played USC Upstate and again won the first set, winning by a 25-15 score. USC Upstate was victorious in the second set, barely coming away with the win.
The Chanticleers wrapped up the tournament against the host school, the University of South Carolina. The Gamecocks took the first set, but the Chanticleers were determined to win against the SEC school, taking the second set 25-23.
"We played very well this weekend," said head coach Jozsef Forman. "Our team fought hard and ended the event on a great note by beating the University of South Carolina. I'm very proud of our young ladies and the effort that they showed during the tournament. I believe this will be a confidence booster as we head into the rest of our Spring schedule."
Meghan Laffin and Lian Bernett led the team overall. Sam Skryd and Lauren Alejo did their part by spreading the ball around as the setters, while Kindra Bailey and Katie Martin performed well in blocking the ball and improved in their transition. Lindsay Gill also had a strong showing this weekend for the Chanticleers.
Coastal will return to action this weekend in Winston-Salem, N.C., as they take part in a tournament at Wake Forest.
