CONWAY, S.C. – The Coastal Carolina University men’s and women’s track and field teams held its annual Black and Teal Showdown intersquad meet Friday, Dec. 3 at the Coastal Carolina Track and Field Complex.  The event was a friendly competition that consisted of 65 athletes split into two squads.

Both teams had a good showing at the event with Vondeeshia Humphries (60m, 150m, 300m), Darriale Henley (60m, 150m), Ashley Davis (60m hurdles, 150m, 300m), Erica Peake (60m, 150m, 300m) and Shantelle Patterson (weight throw, shot put, discus, hammer) highlighting the women’s team.  The men’s team saw top performances by Tyler Askew (60m, 150m, 300m, long jump), Nehemiah Shelley (long jump, triple jump, 60m, 150m), Evan Desaulniers (150m, 300m) and Shane Norris (60m hurdles, 300m hurdles, 150m).

Following the meet, both teams went to the fall wrap-up dinner where guest speaker Dee Dee Trotter spoke to teams about the importance of a drug-free and steroid free lifestyle for athletes.

“It was an honor to be at Coastal Carolina and to speak to these student-athletes about making a difference,” Trotter said.  “I can tell they want to make a positive difference in their lives.”

Trotter is a 2004 Olympic Gold Medalist and also a 2007 World Outdoor Gold Medalist and a 2010 World Indoor Gold Medalist.  She attended Tennessee where she was an NCAA champion in 2004 in the 400 meters.  Trotter is the founder of the non-profit organization, “Test Me, I’m Clean,” which is dedicated to combating performance enhancing drugs in sports.

“It is my passion to be able to proclaim our clean status to the world,” Trotter said.  “I have found out that high school athletes are abusing drugs.  Our foundation sends the message to young athletes, as well as professional athletes.  The foundation has grown tremendously and the message has spread.”

The women’s indoor track and field season will kick off January 14-15 at the Virginia Tech Hokie Invitational.
